Just over a week has passed since storm Amy. Over the last week we have been out and
assessed the damage - which was quite overwhelming to begin with as so many trails had been affected. Following assessing the damage we have had small groups out working away and clearing the trails. In the core LTA group we have put in well over 50 hours on the trails over the last 7 days - in particular Robbie, Stewart and Andrew who have put in the bulk of
the work (thank you!). We know a few others have been out too so well done anyone that
has done any clearing.
So time for a wee update on where we are. Many forest roads and access paths are still
closed and FLS will be reopening these over the next wee while. The vast majority of the
bike trails themselves are now clear. Although free of trees blocking the trails, there is still a
fair bit of debris like sticks lying on the trail surface, plus a few areas of trail that have been
damaged - but mostly passable.
A week ago we were looking at the trails and seeing only a few clear, with the majority
blocked with fallen trees. Now we are looking at the majority being open and only a few
closed. Most notably Top Secret in Torlundy has had massive damage and unlikely to
reopen, Captains left in Erracht and the Braveheart trails in Glen Nevis are also badly
affected and have beyond what we have the capability to clear at the moment.
In the next few weeks we will see if there is any way we can replace lost trails, but this is
likely to take time and planning.
For now Erracht and Nevis Range are in pretty good condition. Strone and Torlundy need
trees cleared on access tracks. Off course there are trails outside of the Fort William area -
please comment if you have any news on the other surrounding trail areas
