Stalwart radio producers step down from All About Frome show

Two community radio producers have stepped down from their popular show, All About Frome, after nine years of volunteering at Frome FM.

Julia Wellard and Rupert Kirkham presented their last show on Tuesday 8th July, before handing over to presenter, Lyndsey Mayhew, who will be presenting a new community-focused show.

Julia and Rupert began the show, along with other volunteer reporters and technical volunteers, in July 2016 and have been airing regular shows live from the radio station studios ever since.

“All About Frome has mainly been all about the volunteering scene in the town and surrounding villages,” said co-producer, Julia Wellard. “Each show, which for the first seven years was produced live every week, has about four items on it.”

About Frome, the show that amongst other things, gives a voice to Frome’s volunteer army, the hundreds of people who give their time and skills to help others in the town. I’m Rupert Kirkham here with co-producer Julia Wellard, who is live in the studio for once!

Today we are discussing the subject of violence against women and girls. The statistics are horrifying, in 2023-4 20% of police recorded crime was related to violence against women and girls.

On International Women’s Day, 8th March, the town council organised a community forum called Accelerate Action: A safer future for women and girls. Our guests today all took part in the forum.
Topics of discussion on the show included the scale of the problem, how are the police getting involved? Local and national government legislation and initiatives. The role of schools and education in trying to prevent domestic violence against women and girls. Public safe places and schemes like the 'Ask for Angela' scheme, local support available in the library.
In the studio we have Emily Denne, safeguarding consultant; Tracey Ashford, town councillor and director of PPurple Elephant - Frome
and Fiona Barrows, town councillor and one of the organisers of the community forum.
