Some repairs, a full clean, clear coat, new rope and leathers and freshly lapped new calf skin heads.

I've had the pleasure to work on this big ol' bass drum over then past couple of months on behalf of Frieth Village.

32" x 12" and over 150 years old.

This bass drum was originally purchased in 1865 when a village band was started.
Photo 3 shows a picture from a local newspaper showing the bass drum in 1866.

Unfortunately it has been rather neglected over the last 50 or so years

It has a good layer of grime all over, quite a severe crack in the solid shell, rope damage in multiple areas, missing/split leathers and both heads damaged.

We wanted to keep/protect the original paint work, so the drum was stripped and fully cleaned. The crack & re rings were repaired, and then the shell & hoops were treated with a protective clear coat.
Then reassembled with new rope & leathers and fresh heads lapped.

Let's hope it lasts another 160 years....

For scale, the last photo shows this beast side by side with a 22" ludwig super classic.

This may well now be the oldest contemporary drum I've had the pleasure of working on.
