💚 Restoring an Icon Above the Tyne
A major phase of restoration on Newcastle’s iconic bridge has been completed—and the results are spectacular. Here’s a look at the work behind the scaffolding:
🛠️ Nearly 100 years of old paint removed
🔩 350+ steel repairs carried out and 1,200 rivets replaced
🎨 Specialist three-coat paint system applied to protect the bridge for the next 30 years
This milestone means 25% of the bridge has now been fully repaired and repainted, as teams continue their work on this historic structure.
Scaffolding around the Newcastle Tower is being gradually removed, giving passers-by a first glimpse of the incredible restoration. Meanwhile, the underside of the main deck has also been restored and awaits its reveal next year as work continues on the bridge’s parapets.

Radio Shields NE is a local radio station based in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, a not for profit company established in 2019 with the aim of engaging the community in the medium of radio through training and experience.
We provide experience and training in broadcast and media skills, promoting education, pathways to employment opportunities and inter-personal skills such as confidence, team building and motivational skills.
We work with people from the community including the unemployed, lone parents, disabled, faith groups, vulnerable adults, schools, local businesses and start up companies, charities and social interest groups.
We have a comprehensive training package which teaches all aspects of radio such as producing, editing, presenting and technical.
As a community business, we rely solely on the support of volunteers to keep the station live and active, and are constantly looking for people to join us in all aspects of radio. As well as "on air" there are also many other areas to get involved with including marketing, live events, technical and general administration.
