Remembering John Peel (30 August 1939 – 25 October 2004) - he would have been 86 today.

Peel was among the first UK DJs to spin psychedelic and progressive rock on the radio. He championed an extraordinary range of styles—pop, dub reggae, punk and post-punk, electronic and dance, indie, extreme metal and UK rap. Fellow broadcaster Paul Gambaccini has argued that, from about 1967 to 1978, Peel was the single most influential figure in popular music, launching more major artists than anyone else.

On Radio 1 his programmes became famous for the Peel Sessions: usually four tracks recorded live in BBC studios, often giving bands their first real national exposure. He also ran the annual Festive Fifty, a listener-voted countdown that helped spotlight new music.

Peel made occasional TV appearances too, presenting Top of the Pops in the 1980s and providing voice-overs for various BBC shows. He later found a big Radio 4 audience with Home Truths, built around unusual stories from listeners’ home lives.

The Blessed Youth...

Tragic End for the Blessed Youth 🇯🇲🎶

His life was cut short at just 21 years old. On 14 October 1983, Hugh Mundell was shot and killed while driving along Grant’s Pen Avenue in Kingston. His wife was in the front seat, and a young Junior Reid was in the back - Reid survived, but reggae lost one of its purest voices 💔

At just 16 years old, Mundell was taken under the wing of Augustus Pablo, who produced his prophetic masterpiece Africa Must Be Free By 1983 (1978) - a roots classic that earned him the title “The Blessed Youth.” 🌱✨

Mundell’s light burned fast, but his songs still ring eternal 🔊
