While there are three council swimming pools in the Southside (four if you include the Gorbals just south of the river), they are clustered around the south and south-western edges of the area, in Bellahouston, Pollok and Castlemilk – leaving some people in areas like Govanhill a bus journey or drive away from their nearest swim.

This might have been less of an issue in 2000, but rising transport costs since then mean it can now be a considerable investment to get a whole family to a swimming pool on a regular basis.

In part three of this three-part article, we explore the closure of these spaces, asking who is most affected when affordable swimming facilities are closed and how this changes who gets to swim and who is left behind.

"In 1860, the viaduct from Loch Katrine opened and began delivering millions of gallons of clean water to Glasgow’s residents. The first concern was to alleviate a series of cholera epidemics and improve sanitation, but as new water supply was connected to different districts of the city, new possibilities emerged, leading to the construction of three, privately-owned swimming pools."

In part two of this three-part article, we dive into the rise of public bathhouses like Govanhill Baths and what these spaces meant for working-class and marginalised communities.

Working with a factor can have lots of benefits for tenement flat owners. But some tenement owners feel let down by the service they provide, and don’t know what options are available to ensure their property manager is following the direction of the owners. We’ve teamed up with Greater Govanhil...

After Govanhill was named the fifth coolest neighbourhood in the world, and the news made it all the way to the Scottish Parliament, we asked local people what they think actually makes the area so special.

"In the early 19th century, for many Glaswegians, the open waters in the city – the rivers and canals – were the only affordable option for bathing for cleanliness and refreshment, as well as being the only places to enjoy swimming for exercise, health and fun. "

In part one of a three-part article, we dive into the history of swimming in Glasgow. From outdoor dips and gendered swimming culture that shaped who got to access the water.

Pitches for Issue 24 are now open!

We’re excited to announce that the next issue of Greater Govanhill will be themed around the topic of “power”.

Our theme is power, but what that means is entirely up to you. Maybe you’re thinking about community power, the power we hold locally, or the forces that shape our lives in ways we can’t always see. Perhaps it’s visible, invisible, hidden, personal or collective.

We want to hear your story ideas, photography pitches, poems and more!

Remember, you don’t need to have any professional writing experience to contribute to Greater Govanhill; the team can support you in developing your ideas and writing.

Send over your ideas by Tuesday, 22 September to [email protected] and [email protected]

Did you participate in FONDS?

Between 2022-24, we invited people who live, work or have a connection to Govanhill to share a personal object with us. Photographer Morwenna Kearsley is now embarking on a new research project and would like to interview past participants of the FONDS project.

The interview would take no more than 45 minutes, can be done in person or online, and will focus on your experience of the project.

If you are interested or would like more information please email Morwenna directly at [email protected] or get in touch with the Greater Govanhill Magazine team.
