HMS Ambuscade/PNS Tariq Technical Committee

The Technical Committee was established on 11 September 2025. Its terms of reference are to take the project forward by focusing exclusively on the technical aspects
of bringing the former HMS Ambuscade/PNS Tariq back from Karachi in Pakistan to a secure
berth on the River Clyde as the centerpiece of a wider project to establish a Historic Dockyard-style public heritage attraction.

The priority outcome for the Technical Committee is to produce a costed project plan for the move, covering immediate preparations, logistics, and potential challenges.

The project will be broken into five distinct phases:
1. Surveys
2. Enabling Works (e.g. emptying of tanks, removal of biohazards, modifications)
3. Loading
4. Transport
5. Offload and Berthing

The following specialists have been recruited to the Technical Panel:

John Bain. Experienced professional with a background in the offshore industry, including
marine construction, towing operations and Marine Warranty Surveying.

Joe Haynes. Former member of HMS Ambuscade’s ship’s company with extensive
subsequent experience as a Merchant Navy ship’s master and Marine Warranty Surveyor.

Nick Hewitt. Naval historian and heritage professional specialising in historic ships, who led a
7-year project to recover and restore LCT-7074 for the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

Mark Hosea. Non-technical consultant and experienced property professional specialising in
master planning, development, delivery, and providing funding advice for heritage projects.

David Manley. UK Ministry of Defence Chair in Naval Architecture at UCL and a senior naval
architect at the MOD with experience in ship design, stability, vulnerability and survivability.

Andrew Pringle. Former Royal Navy engineer and HMS Ambuscade ship’s company with
recent experience at Rolls Royce.

Fantastic news once again for Naval Ship building on the Clyde, perhaps some of the Defence Contractors hoping for business, might consider supporting Clyde Naval Heritage, as we work towards creating a first Naval Museum on the Clyde, based around HMS Ambuscade.

For over 125 years, Babcocks & Wilcox was a supplier of steam boilers and pumps to shipyards on the Clyde, for both naval and commercial use.

Today, Babcock while still active on the Clyde, is a different beast, Rosyth on the river Forth is their main site. In recent years they have neen engaged in the construction of the Royal Navy Aircraft Carriers and currently are building the Type 31 Frigates.

This group was invited to visit the site as they are building the next HMS Active, seen as successors to the Type 21 Amazon Class.

The main purpose of the visit, was to deliver a model of the T21, HMS Active, as a heritage link to the new build programme.

The welcome was exceptional with Babcock staff offering a presentation on plans for the ship build programme. We would like to thank them and the RN senior contact in Scotland, Brig.Andrew Muddiman RM, and Commander Tom Heatherington from HMS Venturer, the first ship in class also under construction, for joining us.

We do hope to repeat this process shortly, with BAE on the Clyde, as legacy builder of HMS Ambuscade.
