WEE STORY WE HAD TO SHARE:

I had just spent an hour in the bank with my Da, as he had to transfer some money. I couldn't resist asking him:
"Da, why don't we set up internet banking for you on your smart phone?"
"Why would I do that?" he replied.
"Because then you wont have to spend an hour in the bank just to transfer cash.
You can even do your shopping online. It would make things so much easier for you!"
I was so excited about getting his online banking set up. It was an excuse to use the new smart phone I’d bought him for his birthday. To be honest, it was more of a paper weight. He was 92, and still liked to do things the “old fashioned way”.
He looked at me and thought for a minute, then answered: "If I do that, I won’t have to step out of the house, will I?"
"No, you won’t," I said. “You can even get your papers delivered, and your slippers from Amazon.”
He looked sad. His reply left me speechless…
"Since I came into this bank today, I have met four of my pals. And I have chatted with each one of them for a while, and with the staff who know me so after all these years.
You know that I am alone since your Mum passed away. This is the company that I need to make it through the day. I like to get myself ready and come to the bank. And for my paper. And to buy things I need. I’m physically fit, and have more than enough time since I retired. It’s the connection and the conversation in person I crave and meeting new people.”
He reminded me: “Two years ago when I got sick, the shop owner at the end of the road came to see me and sat by my bedside and talked to me while the rest of the family were too busy.
When your Aunt Jean had that fall, our green grocer came to visit her. He brought her apples and pears and grapes.
Would I have that 'human' touch to my day if everything i bought was online?
I like dealing with a person and not just a 'seller'.
I looked at him, and smiled. “I love you, Da.” I said.
Technology isn't life. Spend time with people. Not with devices.
