Nicola Sturgeon failed to show up for the launch of her friend Val McDermid's latest novel, despite promising an evening of conversation with the author.

The snub – and on McDermid's 71st birthday too! – came as the SNP continues to reel from a massive financial scandal.

The event at Forum Books in Corbridge, Northumberland, on Thursday, June 4 was heavily trailed in advance on social media, with tickets on sale for £10. The author herself posted on Facebook: "Join Val McDermid in conversation with Nicola Sturgeon at Forum Books!"

However, in the wake of her estranged husband Peter Murrell pleading guilty to a £400k embezzlement spree from party funds and amid ongoing questions over nearly £670k in 'ring-fenced' donations to the SNP, Sturgeon was quietly removed from the bill.

Forum Books confirmed to the Scottish Express that the event was hosted instead by the bookshop manager. A video on Instagram shows McDermid blowing out the candles on her birthday cake, with the message: "Thank you to the wonderful Val McDermid for spending her birthday with us last night! And thank you to all those who attended and made the evening so special."

Jenny Gilruth has been left red-faced after the SNP's new finance secretary appeared to demonstrate that she'd never heard of her own government's Tax Advisory Group.

In an extraordinary exchange at Holyrood on Thursday, Labour MSP Michael Marra asked for an update on the status on the group. He asked: "Will it be maintained, and when will it next meet?"

The Deputy First Minister – who is now in charge of the Scottish budget, with tax hikes and spending cuts looming – replied, somewhat condescendingly: "I think that Mr Marra is referring to the Scottish Fiscal Commission?" The baffled MSP insisted: "No, the tax advisory group."

Ms Gilruth then said: "Right, okay, I'd like like to come back to Mr Marra in greater detail on that. I met with the Scottish Fiscal Commission earlier today and we will continue that engagement."

The exchange was picked up by eagle-eyed Sam Taylor, from the pro-UK organisation These Islands. He posted the clip on X, formerly Twitter, with the comment: "Ideally, the new Cabinet Secretary for Finance would at least have heard of the Scottish Government's Tax Advisory Group. Alas…"

James Mitchell, Professor of Public Policy at Edinburgh University and one of the foremost experts on Holyrood politics, responded: "For goodness sake (not the actual words I said out loud hearing her response)."

The Scottish Affairs Committee at Westminster is to discuss holding an inquiry into the Peter Murrell scandal when it meets next week.

MPs want to look at all aspects, including allegations of 'corruption' involving Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC.

The move would be a huge blow to John Swinney, who has repeatedly refused to even consider a probe into the affair – despite growing evidence that public monies were embezzled by the shamed former chief executive.

Chair Patricia Ferguson, the veteran Scottish Labour MP, has confirmed that it will "consider" holding a probe. Almost all members are in favour, with only the SNP MP Dave Doogan thought to be opposed – although he has yet to comment publicly.
