Artist Spotlight Les Johnson and Me
Les Johnson Me perform as part of The Seven Song Club in association with Holy Smokes Records on Saturday 5th October in Stereo 4pm matinee show.
‘Les Johnson and Me’ is the musical persona of Glaswegian singer-songwriter Kenny Macdonald. When asked about the origin of the name, Macdonald often responds with a blank stare, adding to the project's enigmatic charm. His distinctive baritone voice has been described as a blend of Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, and Tennessee Ernie Ford, all delivered with a uniquely Glaswegian twist.
His debut album, 15 Hands, is a collection of songs that are heartbreaking, darkly humorous, rambunctious, wry, poetic, and serious, tackling a wide range of subjects—from tragedy, triumph, and redemption to Bill Oddie, domestic appliances, and the girl next door. Each song is presented with Les Johnson’s masterful, understated simplicity: plain yet nuanced, tough yet fragile.
Macdonald, who only picked up a guitar in his mid-30s, wrote his first song in his mid-40s, and recorded his debut album in his mid-50s, hopes to inspire musicians and performers of all ages to pursue their creative passions, no matter when they start.
