Emmaus Glasgow

Emmaus Glasgow Emmaus Glasgow is a charity providing a home, support, training and work opportunities for people with experience of homelessness.

We have charity shops in Partick and at our home in Hamiltonhill. Emmaus in Glasgow opened in 2006 and operates a residential community for 29 formerly homeless men and women, known as companions. We fund our community through a reuse business with two retail charity shops in Partick and Hamiltonhill, along with a warehouse in Glasgow. We work closely with other organisations in the area to suppor

t those people who are homeless or trapped by poverty and to help them to develop skills and self-respect through working and contributing. As well as working for the community social enterprises, companions are supported in whatever way they need to address the issues that have brought them into Emmaus, and encouraged to look outside themselves, working in projects to help others in the neighbourhood, and much further afield. Our companions have been involved locally with Get Hooked on Fishing, volunteering at the soup run, distributing The Pavement Magazine, as well as helping support other local charities in Glasgow. Also through our links with the Emmaus International Movement, in projects in Benin, West Africa and Bosnia.

🥕🌱 With more fresh produce now growing in our allotments, there are even more ingredients for community cook, Michael, to use in the kitchens.

Emmaus companion Michael regularly prepares food for Emmaus Glasgow's Soup Kitchen in the city centre on Wednesdays and every other Sunday.

This is in addition to the regular meals Michael prepares for people who have a home, work opportunities, training and support at Emmaus Glasgow.

"I help the soup kitchen because you are giving something back and you don’t know when you are going to be there again," Michael said.

🌱 ♻️ Reuse in action! Repurposing old tyres, upcycling garden ornaments and finding new uses for wooden pallets and gutters have given our allotments a new lease of life at our homelessness charity.

As well as a place to grow vegetables, we like to make sure our gardens are a welcoming space for our residents to relax. Our Darren used silver paint to gave our bird pond a refresh to attract our feathered friends.

Everything we grow in the allotments, from carrots (tended to by our Brian) to chard, is used to prepare healthy meals at our community home from homelessness in Hamiltonhill.

If you've got any ideas for reuse and repurposing other items, we would love to read your ideas in the comments!

Well done to our companion Darren for creating this fantastic example of Emmaus upcycling 👍

Darren came up with this great way of reusing the drums from washing machines that are donated to our homelessness charity, but can no longer be sold in our shops - reducing waste, reusing items and upcycling!

Darren developed his carpentry skills to fit and finish this wonderful table top in the wood workshop we have on-site at our homelessness accommodation building. You can even put a light inside, so lovely sparkles get projected around your room.

If you would like to order one of these beautiful tables or have a piece of furniture you would like Emmaus Glasgow to make, get in touch with us by selecting the option for Hamiltonhill Charity Shop or Partick Charity Shop on 0141 353 3903.

Bike rescue! Well done to Emmaus companion Blue who stopped to help someone whose bike had broken on the Forth and Clyde Canal path 🔧 🚲👍

Blue completed a bike maintenance course with Bike for Good Glasgow in December, and put his skills to good use to help out.

“The lady was dragging her bike along as the back wheel wasn't moving, so I offered to look at it for her. She thought the rear brakes were stuck but I found the wheel had come out of line and were rubbing against the frame, so I re-seated the wheel and tightened it back up, and she was able to cycle off to her destination.

“I learned a lot on the course, from putting pedals back on to indexing gears. She was very grateful, but it’s nice just to be nice.” Blue said.
