We are delighted to let you know that our new Shannon class lifeboat has officially been declared a search and rescue asset by the Coastguard and is now on service as of 1358hrs (1.58pm) this afternoon, coinciding with the numbers on the side of the lifeboat.
This is a major milestone for the station and marks the culmination of months of training by our selfless and dedicated volunteer crew as we transitioned from our beloved Trent class lifeboat, Dr John McSparran to the new Shannon, Machiko Nancy.
We want to sincerely thank everyone who got us to this point - our volunteer crew for their commitment to training, to our wider team of volunteers for their support in every and any way, and to our staff team who facilitated our training and supported our journey as we transitioned to this new class of lifeboat. Thanks too to our families and supporters, every one has played a vital role.
The Shannon has been largely funded by donor Michael Cameron via the Cameron Family Charitable Foundation, and will be named in memory of his wife, Machiko Nancy, one of the founders of that charity, later this summer. We are indebted to Michael and thank him for his generosity.
As we enter this exciting new chapter, our final thought is one of nostalgia as we now prepare to bid farewell to the Dr John McSparran, which has served the community off the Larne coast for the last quarter of a century.
During that time, the Dr John McSparran has launched 281 times, with our volunteer crews rescuing 438 people, five of whom were lives saved.
