GLOUCESTER to HOST Channel 4 LOCAL ELECTION DEBATE.

As the political temperature rises for the MAY 2nd LOCAL ELECTIONS – and a general election looms not far behind – Channel 4 has selected GLOUCESTER as a key location for coverage in a planned nationwide debate.

GLOUCESTER is seen as a bellwether city on the UK's political map since 1979, any political shift in local and Westminster preferences in Gloucester has been found to call the national result, so Channel 4 is understandably heading this way.

Candidates hoping to win voters over on MAY 2nd will pitch head to head on THURSDAY, APRIL 25, when the broadcaster platforms the electoral choices before a selected audience.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Punchline-Gloucester.com Editor Mark Owen, Channel 4 News Producer Sarah Beale said the location played a significant role in reading the runes for where the UK is heading in 2024. The LINK is below _

As the first broadcaster to reveal its May 2 plans, C4 will host 'The UK Decides: Local Elections Debate' as an addition to its daily news programming – a move it says is part of its commitment to political coverage in the lead up to the general election.

With filming planned at a location yet to be revealed, a small, representative studio audience of 50 people will have the opportunity to pose questions to party representatives, in the live debate hosted by presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy.

Esme Wren, Channel 4 News Editor said: "We know local constituencies - particularly in marginal seats - will tell a compelling story in the lead up to the general election so it's vital our viewers have access to the main parties and their policies as voters head to the polls.

“Stimulating debate is central to our remit and we know this will be a fascinating television event from one of the UK's flagship news programmes.”

Krishnan Guru-Murthy, added: "There's no doubt this is a seismic year for UK politics. With local councils facing severe financial difficulties and public services under pressure, May's local elections are the first nationwide test for the political parties at the polls.

“We look forward to heading to Gloucester to put voters' questions to a panel of politicians from all the main parties.”

● 'The UK Decides: Local Elections Debate' will be broadcast on Channel 4 News on Thursday April 25 at 7pm and across the programme's digital channels. Further operational details will be reported when known, including the venue and a list of panellists.

Gloucester is one of the first Councils in the country to commit to a voluntary code that will require all licensed venues in the City to help prevent spiking and support victims - thanks to the Conservative-led administration.

In presenting the motion on Thursday Cllr Kubaszczyk said: "I want this council to learn from this issue and work collaboratively to create a code of conduct around drink spiking, implement measures to mitigate drink spiking and provide appropriate support training for staff to respond to a spiking incident.

There have been more than 100 cases reported in Gloucestershire since last July

The local Conservative team have been busy over the past couple of days putting reminder notes through letter boxes urging people to use their hard won right to vote . And to vote for the Conservative team which has been there all year round working on behalf of people in Grange and not just popping up at Election time.

I have sent reminders to Glos Highways about the blocked roadside drain gulleys in Grange Rd outside the Baptist Church and potholes in Althorp Close and under the Grange Rd railway bridge.

Thanks to Glos Highways for quickly repairing the footpath damage in Golden Close caused by tree roots. Also progress in sorting out the strange large crack to the footpath next to the Library car park . I will be calling back on a couple of Bodiam Avenue residents today who asked me for information and yes - more door knocking this afternoon !

Firstly about continued dangerous speeding along Bodiam Avenue which we will take up with the Police . Other matters include trees along Daniels Brook and in Holmleigh Park which we will talk to the City Council about and lastly a national matter to be referred to Richard Graham our M.P.

Excellent news this morning on two local issues - firstly the extra bench seat which I have arranged for Lasborough Drive play area should be installed in the next couple of weeks. Also that work on the extensive environmental improvements to Holmleigh Park are scheduled to start in late June.I am currently working on a repair to the footpath at the Tuffley Library car park and tree issues on Daniels Brook.

More good news , I have seen a surveyor from City Fibre and engineers in Holmleigh Rd looking at plans . So there is every chance superfast Broadband is on its way to our area . We will find out more and let you know. I have also asked that the Silver Close street nameplate which is very faded be repainted.
