Last week, the Bourne Motor Racing Club held a special centenary celebration of Dick Salmon, who sadly passed just a few weeks before his 100th birthday.

Club members were able to reminisce and share memories of one of their most popular members for what proved a fitting tribute. The raffle prize was a copy of Dick's book, Raymond's Legacy, published earlier this year. It was presented to the winner Carol Corliss, herself a noted BRM authority, by none other than Richard Attwood.

Our first new book of 2025 is out now and available for immediate despatch.

Raymond's Legacy: A Century of Motorsport in Bourne is written from the first-hand perspective of former BRM mechanic Dick Salmon, pictured here.

Raymond Mays founded both ERA and BRM in the Lincolnshire town of Bourne. In Raymond's Legacy, Dick Salmon tells the story of the struggles and triumphs of Mays' activities, from finding funding to assembling a team that could compete at the highest level on the world stage. He also places into context the huge effect Mays' activities had on the local area and the motorsport teams and specialists that were spawned from ERA and BRM and continue operating to this day. There are plenty of first-hand accounts from the sharp end of being involved with the team allowing the reader to experience the highs and lows of grand prix racing.

The cancellation of this weekend's Race Retro means we won't have a real-world launch of Fast Metal, but because we're now at the office we can offer them online with immediate despatch.

Brian Eade was told by one his school masters that he would amount to nothing. He began proving them wrong almost as soon as he left, landing a job working on Concorde. From there, he went into Formula One working at McLaren Racing in James Hunt’s championship-winning year before continuing to build a career in motorsport that would take him all around the world, working behind the scenes at IndyCar, the Baja 1000, Group C racing in Japan and the British Touring Car Championship.

Fast Metal is an autobiographical tale from the less glamorous side of motorsport. The long hours and the lows as well as the highs. It also shines a light on the in-jokes and humour the keep the unsung heroes of motorsport motivated during the tougher times in the job. Brian Eade also weaves his challenges in maintaining his personal life around globe-trotting and long, unpredictable working hours.

It’s a story on the side of motorsport that is rarely told, from Formula One racing in the 1970s to the pinnacle of touring car racing in the 1990s.

The RAC Motoring Book of the Year awards ceremony takes place at the RAC Club in Pall Mall on Wednesday of this week – and Gerry Birrell: Lost Before His Time has been shortlisted for this prestigious award. Released earlier this year, Gerry Birrell is written by respected motorsport historian Darren Banks.

Up-and-coming Scottish ace Gerry Birrell was on the verge of achieving his ambition of reaching the pinnacle of motorsport when he needlessly lost his life in a preventable high-speed accident on the fast sweeping bends of the Rouen-Les-Essarts circuit in Northern France. The book details Birrell's rise and contains memories from many people who knew him.
