Christmas 1985 and the UK 34th Christmas Number one was “Merry Christmas Everyone” by Shakin’ Stevens. The song was produced by a previous Christmas number one artist, that being Dave Edmunds and his song “I hear you knocking” in 1970. “Merry Christmas Everyone” was written by Bob Heatlie who also wrote Aneka’s 1981 hit “Japanese Boy”. “Merry Christmas Everyone”, was ready for release the previous year, but with Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” on the horizon, it was decided to hold tight for a year. This of course paid off as Shakin’ Stevens “Merry Christmas Everyone” was 1985s Christmas number one. Staying on top of the UK singles chart for 2 weeks and has become another of those perennial Christmas hits ever since.
