There will be a public meeting next Friday 1st August 6:30PM at Colossal Youth (now 145 King St) in Yarmouth, to talk about militarisation in the East, and the region's complicity in the ongoing genocide in Palestine.
We have all heard the increasing sounds of planes above. We have all witnessed the recruitment of young working class kids into the army. We all know there is an American company in Yarmouth that manufactures components for Israeli fighter jets. We have all been impacted by austerity and welfare cuts while the UK simultaneously gives millions of £'s worth of aid to Israel and profits millions of £ from selling arms.
Everyone welcome (except cops or fascists), there will be childcare, and food. Very sorry to say that the space is currently not wheelchair accessible, but hopefully next time it will be.
If you live in Yarmouth or East Anglia please come!

Spectrum Control, based in Great Yarmouth, is a leading supplier of electromagnetic component parts for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. These are then supplied to Israel to commit genocide in Gaza and war crimes against Palestinian and Lebanese civilians.

Evening’ all! An update for you, and a rare picture of Karl doing some work! Anyway, we’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you who’ve donated to and shared our GoFundMe me page, so far we’re well over halfway to our initial target of £2000, sitting somewhere round £1250, brilliant stuff, and were touched that it means this much to you all! Plans for the first lot of money coming through are to seal all the walls first. A lot of crumbling brickwork needs some immediate attention; every time a big truck rumbles past we get another little shower of red dust falling to the floor! We’ve costed out the materials for stage power too, a dedicated electrical feed to run all the PA system, desk, amplifiers etc, plus lights on 16A feeds, with a domestic 13A spur for equipment as well, probably eating up half what we have with installation if we can get decent mates rates from a sparky! We’ve made inroads into toilet situation too, plumber is booked just in time for our hopeful opening on 6th September, and we’ve got a few materials in to tidy the place up, some paint and stuff, doors that are currently missing, and necessary hardware etc. still plenty to do, and we’ve spent everything in advance of it actually landing in the account, but a great start, feel proud of yourselves! However… we’re still short of our target, and it seems that our target was rather conservative, a bigger building needs bigger and more everything. 11,000+ views on the post for the GoFundMe and 110 shares, 10% of you shared our post, which is pretty amazing in itself! But just imagine if every one of those 11,000 views had turned into £1 for us, where would we be then? If 30% of you had shared it, how many views would that be? The response in the first 24 hours was utterly incredible, but the drop off has been sharp, it’s just a little trickle now, so, we’re humbly asking again, please share our post if you haven’t already, it will help, and it’s free to do! If you can donate though, that’s what makes it all happen! Even if it’s just a couple of quid, just as gratefully received as £200, it all adds up, we need to open as soon as we can! Pinned post at the top of the page for the link, love to you all, Colossal Youth Forever!!

Hey everyone, hope you're all doing well and enjoying not being damp and cold! Hmm, like a metaphor for venues old and new... Anyway, we're busy sorting millions of things out trying our hardest to get fully open in the new place by September, but with no way of getting any income into the CYGY coffers, and financing all the work ourselves, it's proving rather costly, and we can't sustain this unless wed put off opening until maybe 2030 or something! Funding is a long way off, and with our determination to stay autonomous, it may never appear, but either way, we need some help here in the present. So, a gofundme has been created. Please choose as many of the following as apply!

1. Please donate, however little it may be. The last video I did a few days ago got 5000 views so far! If this went out to 5000 people who all gave £1, we'd be cracking on with a lot of stuff right now.
2. Please share as much as possible, wherever you can. The only way we got to 5000 views on the video was by some of you sharing, please double the efforts for this one.If you ever came to our last venue, you know how much Gt. Yarmouth needs this!
3. Actual real world help. Ok, we could really do with friendly workers who are into what we're doing. So, plumbers, electricians, builders, decorators, any tradespeople who can offer some help, or just advice, whatever, we'll be grateful. Contact us here and let us know what you can offer, whether you can do it for free, "mate's rates", or if you'd need paying your going rate, and we'll hopefully get on quicker. And if you have no such trades, but you want to get involved and help, still plenty to be done, don't be shy!

Ok, enough chatter, let's get this thing moving, thanking you in advance for your generosity, and share, especially if you can add a little bit about us from your experience of the place. Thank you!!!!!!

Yeah, we've been a bit quiet, but we've not gone away, and we've not been idle either. Well, no more than usual, after all, we shouldn't believe people when they say hard work never killed anyone, it did, plenty! Usually when it's for a boss pushing and pushing though, we're happy to work hard for ourselves and you lot. But anyway, stay tuned people, we should have some news dropping very soon! Can't say anything more just yet, but can't keep completely quiet either, so apologies for the tease, hopefully it'll be worth it, watch this space! ❤️🖤❤️🖤❤️

What's on my mind, facebook asks? Lots and lots and lots, so best share some of it with you lovely p***y people! But just before i do, here's a picture of Phat Problem tearing it up at the last CYGY gig. Now that sounds very sad, last gig at CYGY, but I didn't mean last ever, despite what many of you have heard, it was just the last one we had, i.e., the one before the next one. So yeah, think it's time we gave you all a bit of an update as I'm sure that the rumours and chatter haven't reached all of you quite yet...
So, as many of you know, on the 6th March (if I remember the date right, can't be bothered checking, but for the purposes of this, it doesn't matter too much!) we were informed that we had 3 weeds to leave our beloved, damp, sweaty, arty, creative, and above all, autonomous premises so the new owners of the building and flats there can get a few more £££s by installing another convenience store/v**e shop/mobile phone shop/barber's or whatever, as, to be fair, we only have about 20 convenience stores in the 300m stretch of road by us. In some places, not only do you have to walk past one shop to get to the next one, some places they're as far apart as 2 shops in between, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but pretty sure there's even the odd place with 3 other premises prising apart the almost continuous barrage of "convenience" stores. So, we should have gone by now. But, as many of you have no doubt discovered after a few trips around the sun, nothing good ever happens, nothing s**t ever changes, if we just meekly roll over and do what we're told by people who have only their own interests at heart. So we didn't, we took possession of the building, and are now squatting for the foreseeable future. We knew we were never completely secure there, but we always knew we'd have 3 months to get out if anything did ever happen. Which of course it didn't, because who wants to pay loads of rent for a building that leaks in various places, and floods in the basement every time it rains for more than half an hour? We do indeed suspect that new tenants have been fabricated to expedite our removal from the place, but unfortunately for Mr Landlord, it hasn't happened like that, despite him assuring us he was coming to change the locks, throw us out, and dump all our assorted stuff in the street outside. We did say it would be a wasted journey, as we're not inconsiderate people, and he must have had better things to do than drive up from London to have his bluster and bravado called out. Not to mention being laughed at by the Old Bill when he requested that they es**rt him and a locksmith to our doors while he committed a crime in broad daylight. I did tell him that would happen... Oh well, we're still here, but at some point the court order will no doubt send us packing, so we're on the hunt for a suitable replacement. Tons of leads, many unsuitable, a couple of possibilities, but we'll be back, and there will be at least one more gig at 169 King Street, possibly more, so keep watching, keep following us, and bands, please keep coming and playing!
So, I'm sure you're all itching to come and help in some way, but you don't know what to do? Well, there are things that won't take much effort that you can do, according to your individual circumstances, mostly easy stuff that won't take very long. Very simple thing, send us donations! If you're a bit flush and can help out financially, we will be incurring more expenses than usual in the coming weeks/months. Hate being on the blag, but we have done all of this with zero funding, we put on the shows and pay bands their expenses (some travel a long way to play here and fuel ain't cheap), we feed everyone, beers for the bands and so on, plus the day to day expenses, and the silly amount of time we dedicate to the place just to lose money every gig! That's not a whinge, by the way, just facts. Whatever happens in the future, we will be incurring more costs that we probably won't be able to afford very comfortably between the relatively small core crew we have here. So if you can afford the price of a coffee, or a pint of premium lager even, message us for payment details, it would be much appreciated. Or if your band has any merch they could donate for sale or anything really. Get a team of you doing a sponsored litter pick and dogs**t clean up in town? Should get some people on our side as well, haha! So, apart from the clean up one, easy things, but we understand that many can'r afford to help out in that way, but there are other things we need. We want to show how much CYGY is needed here in town, have valuable it is, and try and demonstrate how much of an effect it's having now, and the positive way it will affect the town, its youth and its inhabitants. So, please, review us, on here (realised earlier we've had reviews switched off forever, but can be done now), or Google, TripAdvisor, or anywhere, (also be great if you could do similar with reviews of Picket Line Promo and Urinal Vinyl as well, who are both massive parts of what happens here!) just stars if you want, great to have a little explanation of why we're so great if you have time of course; or what would be really wonderful is, if you have a story of how it's changed or affected your life/outlook/relationships/mental health, or anything like that, please do share with us, anonymously if you wish of course. Email anything you have to [email protected] please, all helps! Also, just talk about us to people. We believe we're a force for good in the town, we believe that it's a valuable asset in a place with not a lot of positivity, other than the thin veneer of seaside garishness and temporary joys. There's deprivation and poverty, and we have a venture capitalist in London buying up a load of cheap properties (5 shops and 13 flats in that little bit where we are) so he can rinse it for hefty profits (we've done the sums!) and suck more money out of the place. He won't be spending it here, so the problem is compounded. Also, find us a new venue! Donate one to us, haha! Just do what you can people, this is our venue, our scene, we're in it together, we fight together, and we'll fu***ng win together. Anarcho Yarco forever! Colossal Youth forever! (we mean it man...)

28/03/2025

Short notice I know, but if anyone can get to Colossal Youth first thing in the morning (Friday 28th March) we'd appreciate a bit of solidarity as we resist eviction. The owner seems fairly dedicated to the idea of coming here in the morning, and changing all the locks, then throwing us and all the equipment and everything in there out on to the street. Not sure how he's planning on achieving this, and he has been informed that to do so would be a criminal act for which he could face a hefty punishment, but apparently he doesn't care. So, maybe he's bringing a few people, maybe not, but any of you who can get here, please do so, we'll be providing teas and coffees, sparkling conversation, and camaraderie, and real community.

We knew it wouldn't last forever, 4 and 1/2 years though, and given 3 weeks to leave, we've got nowhere to go yet, although we're working on it, but we need to stay here until it's time to go. Had we been given 90 days notice, as per our original agreement, no problem. A back up place was also offered a while back, (not really suitable, but that's irrelevant) something else that was then removed from the list of options we might have had.

We are operating within the law. Squatting a non residential building is not a criminal offence, but a civil one. The owner can either accept our terms, in which we have stated we simply need more time to get into a new venue, we're a community based collective run on a non profit basis, and we have no kitty for anything like this. We can't just get everything out and pay for storage until such time as we have the venue ready. We are making inroads into a new place, and things are looking positive, but we don't have anywhere to go yet. We're a positive force in this town, we don't need another convenience store, another v**e shop, another nail salon, another mobile phone shop, f**k that. We need hope, positivity, dreams, vibrancy and punk rock!

Please share, please attend, please give us hope, please stand up for what is good and right! Anarcho Yarco needs you! Colossal Youth Forever!

10/03/2025

Hey everyone, hope you're all good, sunshine out there in recent days, winter fading, and into another year. So, yeah, here's a story anyway. If you don't want a story, skip to the end and find out about the gig coming up very soon, otherwise, please get comfortable and I'll begin. Not at the beginning as you may expect, but rather the most recent of times, i.e. the last few days. A thing happened, which we sort of knew would one day despite hoping it wouldn't, but so far it hadn't, so it wasn't an issue. Except now it kind of has.

So, skipping back in time briefly, to the beginning, the space was originally opened up to us through East Street Arts/Original Projects (to whom we are most grateful), as a kind of protection by occupation deal, in which we were allowed to use the building for creative/artistic endeavours, and by being there keep the place in a reasonable sort of condition. Seemed fair. Ticked over for a little while, some film screenings, book releases/signings, a small gig on the ground floor, poetry, some graffiti workshops in stencilling for youngsters who didn't quite fit with mainstream schooling and had been excluded, and various things going on from time to time of that ilk. All good. We also had projections from the upstairs across the street onto the buildings opposite, quite often a talking point amongst locals, sometimes just icons of music or film, sometime acerbic social or political commentary depending on the news at the time. Was still a basement downstairs full of all sorts of s**te, and with a small bit of water leakage, was a bit rank down there. Would be nice to clear it though and have some sort of music going on, bands rehearsing, maybe even a gig yeah?

Up until this point, this was mainly Karl and Lotte (red herring press) doing all this. Then one day Ash (Doghead Promo) and Steve (Urinal Vinyl Records) made contact, initially with the plan of forming a modern beat combo of the hardcore punk variety. Ash mentioned the place and suggested it as a cheap rehearsal space and to come and check it out. That was it. Karl and Steve hit it off, Ash was always motivated, and before too long Steve's Transit had been on multiple trips, the basement was finally cleared and the next phase had arrived. A poorly constructed stage was thrown together with wood and ply that was lying around in various places, Steve donated his drum kit and a few bits and pieces of equipment, then tapped up various sound engineer mates for bits of sound system they had surplus to requirements, likewise with musicians who donated amps, speaker cabs etc., and we were off. Sadly Steve and Ash never got the band going, but Colossal Youth had taken over! Now for a silly idea, let's put a punk gig on in the basement of an old shop in a town with practically no punks or punk scene. What could go wrong? Nothing, really, we had no expectations, just felt like doing it. 3 local acts were signed up, Stankfinger, 5 years together, and had never played in their home town, this was the first time! S.B.T. (now defunct sadly) and All My Yesterdays (Amy French, fantastic acoustic singer/songwriter, great natural performer). Steve got behind the desk and off we went. Free entry, payment by donation, bring your own beers, just come and enjoy it. And people did. We were blown away by the crowd. They arrived, they drank, talked, danced, laughed and made an amazing thing happen. We raised some money for a local charity feeding homeless and vulnerable people, we made an event happen, and we all felt it, something special had been born. No one knew how or why, but we all felt it. This wasn't done as a money making endeavour (our motto has always been that we don't want to lose money doing this, and we don't want to make money either) it wasn't done to polish egos, for social standing or kudos. It was done for whoever needed or wanted it, and it was pretty damn good.

So, scooting on towards the present again, after many events, many bands from all over the UK not to mention as far away as Peru even! Well established headliners, established support acts, local bands, debut gigs, bands formed through meeting here, rehearsing here, gigging here, breaking up here, all of it interspersed with mopping up the basement when it rained a bit too much. Then one day, the news no one wanted, we lost the place, someone was taking it on to turn it into another fu***ng convenience store. We had a gig on that weekend, we were gonna party, and through the shock we carried on. It rained that night, and just as the gig was about finished and most people had left, then the real flooding started. Absolute torrent of water coming through the ceiling into the basement, and before long there was an inch, maybe inch and a half of water down there. Disaster! One that saved us. All of a sudden the place wasn't as desirable. The owners of the building did nothing about it, the problem was also affecting the jeweller next door/directly above the basement; his shop was being flooded and was coming straight through his floor/our ceiling and flooding us. As the owners were being useless, he managed to sort out rerouting the leakage with a bit of handy cementing, and dried his shop out, and we managed to scoop all the water out into buckets and out into the street, and back to business. There was still a bigger problem than before, but we could stay on top of it. We were lucky to have had Tray build us a new stage as the last one hadn't really withstood more than a couple of gigs, but it seemed fine until just recently...

The stage is bad. Holes appearing here and there, almost dangerous really. Had to stop using the place as a rehearsal some time ago as it was impossible to keep the place dry down there all the time. Ok for a gig every few weeks, but to make it always usable was a big ask for a small crew, Ash had had to drop out some time ago as a new and proud father of twins, and Picket Line Promo had stepped in to help out, which started off as a collective but was now really just Alex, an absolute star that we're lucky to have, and Lotte now had her own premises further down the road which was her main priority now. So Colossal Youth was essentially just Karl (Venue Manager and Head Chef of the veggie/vegan chilli) and Steve (Technical director, Sound Engineer and Artist Liaison) most of the time assisted by John (Spud, general dogsbody, bin emptying, basement mopping), and Alex helping out with getting bands and promo for the gigs, as well as doing merch on the nights, running around for band riders, keeping everyone happy, and generally being totally invaluable as well as a jolly good egg. However another band was forming here, and a bunch of practical chaps as well. In return for rehearsing in the space they offered to build a new stage for us before the next gig (see attached poster, 22nd March, not far off!) But, bad things were afoot.

In the preceding months, not sure when off the top of my head, summer 2024 some time, the always absent owners of the building around us, and ours of course, had given up playing with Yarmouth, and sold them all off. They had little interest in what was happening here, just numbers on a spread sheet, no repairs, but more importantly, no hassle. The odd person had come to look at the place with a view to renting it, but nothing happened, and we carried on as before, although with the regular flooding we'd lost the ability to have regular bands rehearsing, also the stencil workshops had stopped for the same reason, but there was now an air of uncertainty with the new owners. Would they be sympathetic to what we were doing here? Would they see the value of it all? Venture capitalists aren't known for their empathy/sympathy or altruism... Well, we met with them (more than we'd ever done with the old owners) and several times after as well. A lot more involved. We spoke, we told them what they did, they were friendly, pleasant, nodded and smiled, they may have even listened to some of the things we said from time to time. Ultimately though, they wanted money back on their investment. We tried to negotiate something. We never wanted to monetise the place, we wanted to share it. We wanted to create something where people could also create something. But we had to think. We said we'd love to rent it and would like first refusal, but with a flooding basement, we had no real chance of income, no bands rehearsing, no workshops, get the leaks fixed and we'd talk again. Attempts were made to stop the leaking, unsuccessful (as we thought they might be!)and a couple of more months went by. Again we saw and spoke to the owners, handshakes, smiles and so on, then a few days ago we were informed that some people were coming to look at the place. And they did, and then came the news we didn't want to hear, one of them had said yes, perfect, love it, I'll have it. S**t. So time to look at that first refusal, we need to work out a way of sorting this. Plans were drawn up, numbers added, subtracted, multiplied and divided, ideas were shared, modified, accepted and rejected, and we worked out a plan of action. We knew we had 3 months notice to work with, and now we had a plan, so we rang the owner the following day for a conversation, Started pleasantly enough, and then onto the nitty gritty. Gone was the smiling, hand shaking, "just one of the lads" persona, and out came the ruthlessness. No, we can't have it, we had our chance before and didn't take it, yes, someone is coming in, the deal has been done, moaning about the mortgage he had on the place (I would have thought he took it on voluntarily?) and to add insult to injury, 30 days to pack up and go. Surely you mean 3 months as we had always been told? No, 30 days, f**k off! East Street Arts have also been in touch. Noticed was served to them, they have an actual date for us to be out, 27th March. This was 6th March we were having this conversation. Not even 30 days, a mere 21! Taking the p**s or what?

So there we have it ladies and gentlemen and those happily in between or on their way from one to the other. They want us to f**k off. 5 days after the next gig. Well, that is a damned shame is it not? As I said earlier, the first gig, we felt something special had been born. That feeling was only compounded over time, this place has been amazing, and it's not down to any of us here, we've played our part, sure, as has the building. But Colossal Youth is not this building, it's not Karl, Alex, Ash, Lotte or me, it's not the bands, it's not the audience. It is all of us, together. This is often referred to (quite rightfully I suppose) as a DIY space. We've often had favourable comparisons to a couple of venues I've been lucky enough to play in and visit, The 1 in 12 Club in Bradford, and Brighton's Cowley Club. High praise indeed. But in that very Bradford venue, whilst in my old band Contempt, we played with an Indonesian band, Rebel Riot, who espoused that it's not DIY, it's DIT, Do It Together. They were inspirational for me, they walked the walk, not just talked the talk. They raised money for all the homeless children on their streets, fed them, taught them skills, taught them to play instruments so they could busk for money rather than begging, just making things happen. That's what we want to do. Action for a positive future. Even here in scummy old Anarcho Yarco. We deserve it. Nothing's too good for the working classes, we deserve everything anyone else does. And we're doing it together, for each other and ourselves. Mutual aid. Anarchism in action for the benefit of all. Do It Together.

So, to conclude my mini novel, fear not, worry not, Colossal Youth is not dead. Like so many things in life, what seems like a disaster is merely a clear out, as we emerge like a butterfly from the cocoon, a phoenix from the ashes. We need each other now, we need your assistance as well. Plans are in action and when we have something to share and the time is right, we will share it with you. In the meantime, we need you to come along to the gig on the 22nd and have a marvellous time. We need your donations for sure, yeah, but we also need your moral support, we need your positivity and we will continue to facilitate these marvellous events and even take it up a level. We already had some plans in the pipeline before all this happened, fledgling plans at the moment, but time will tell. We're not going to let someone who doesn't even live in Norfolk come here, turn CYGY into another convenience store or mobile phone shop or whatever it is, and destroy something that breathes life into this town. Too many people see cheap properties here, buy up, then charge maximum rent, just sucking more money out of an already deprived and poverty stricken town. We will survive and we will thrive. See you in the moshpit, 3 class acts for you Saturday 22nd March, pay what you can afford for entry, BYOB, vegan/veggie chilli for a donation and in solidarity we will continue. Post public, please share with your friends, let's make this one hell of a party. Colossal Youth Forever!

Anarchy Peace and Chips, Steve x

Ok, hope you're all over it now, hangovers fading, stomachs slowly subsiding, xmas jumpers in the wash ready to be folded and put away until next year, and ready to blow out Tuesday night to celebrate some arbitrary time when the new year allegedly starts. Good excuse for a p**s up though, as if you needed one! So, I could have had a better one personally, nowt to do with prezzies or company, but currently laid up with bloody pneumonia, so working at half speed right now. Even full speed ain't that fast, so half speed, I'm not getting much done. Was hoping to announce the new end of/start of year sale to clear the shelves and make some space, but not quite there yet, so time to bring out an old favourite in the meantime, yeah!! (cheering, clapping, whistling, general excitement, gradually fading back to...) Yep, its, the £30 lucky dip box. B**g me £30 via the usual method you b**g me your cash whatever that is, and you will get either 6LPs posted to your UK address, or 12 7" singles, or indeed anything in between, e.g. 5 LPs, 2 x 7", or 2 x LPs and 8 x 7", got it? All clear? Good, so let's move on. Send the £££, and a message (with your address if I haven't already got it) telling me whether you want LPs, 7"s, half and half, don't give a f**k what you get or whatever, and my xmas elves will get to packing your parcels as they've all been laid off recently and are willing to work for next to nothing. No, I'm not exploiting them, I'm giving them their pride back! It's important to elves y'know. Parcels will include a variety of stuff, no doubles obviously, just stuff I need gone to make space, so a good few UV releases, naturally, plus general overstocks, the odd title with a bump or bend to the sleeve maybe, obscure stuff that no one's bought because they have no idea how good it is, things I come across as I'm sorting out that I forgot I had and never even made it to the website, and whatever I find down the back of the sofa. Please share far and wide, contact me for payment details if you don't have, outside UK contact me and we'll sort out some sort of equivalent deal, too many different international prices to do a blanket deal for you I'm afraid. Come on, you only have to ask yourself one question! Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk?

Next event at CYGY, Saturday 23rd November, and we've got an absolute banger! 3 bands, 3 styles, but all under the punk umbrella! From Nottingham, Cheap Dirty Horse, rowdy q***r trash folk punk, getting a great reputation around the country, an excellent chance to see them close up and banging out the tunes in our sweaty basement, not to be missed. London hardcore punks Jawless finally get to make an appearance too! Wanted them on at CYGY ever since I saw them tear through a high octane set at the Diabetes Weekender a couple of years ago. They nearly made it but for a mix up on what date they were being asked to play, should have been the saturday, but we were one out on the date and they were all ready to play the Friday; by the time the mistake had been realised it was too late and they were already elsewhere on the Saturday, but all that is rectified now. Expect an absolute blast! And if that isn't enough (it is, but we're giving you more!) we also have Wokerati Party playing. Anyone who saw T-Bitch when they played here may have an inkling of what to expect, lefty liberal terrorist loving anti British perverts, turning our children gay. You have been warned! Usual sketch, vegan chilli available for a small donation, BYOB, pay what you can afford. Please give generously, the bands need their petrol money and if they don't get it, they will stop coming, let's keep the scene alive and kicking here in Anarcho Yarco, see you in the mosh pit!
