Our media training has helped aspiring journalists in Cambodia.

Raksmey Romas is from an indigenous community in Mondulkiri Province, which is often marginalised.

She attended a BBC Media Action-funded journalism training course and is now able to tell the stories of her community and their traditional culture.

She’s now a role model for other indigenous young people.

The Invaluables Recyclers Café is our mobile outreach effort developed as part of the H&M Foundation-funded Saamuhika Shakti - In Solidarity with Waste Pickers – a collective impact initiative focused on empowering informal waste pickers in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. Launched at the Green Festival – Hasiru Habba – it was inaugurated by the minister for forest, environment, and ecology from the state and implemented in collaboration with Hasiru Dala.

The café is one of several ways the initiative is strengthening inclusion, visibility, and dignity for those at the heart of the city’s waste ecosystem.

Our Life in Lulu radio drama is shaping a better future for South Sudan by portraying a model village, all while tackling challenging and sensitive topics and providing hope for change.

Its storylines have explored beliefs about health, conflict, gender-based and intimate partner violence.

Series 10 aims to engage young people in civic life while continuing to address the issue of gender-based violence.

Originally inspired by the BBC's The Archers, Life in Lulu enjoys a similar profile and popularity in South Sudan.

Sok San Family is a Cambodian TV drama that challenges negative norms through relatable characters and storytelling.

The Klahan9 SPACE project reached 2 million viewers, encouraging intergenerational discussions and empowering youth to engage in public life.

It also supports parents in adopting a more open approach to parenting.

Madubi (Mirror), a Hausa-language radio drama in northern Nigeria, tackles the stigma and discrimination faced by people with disabilities - and their rights to access sexual and reproductive healthcare.

Our project with Sightsavers features a fully diverse team throughout the production process - and relatable storylines that reflect the reality of disability inclusion in everyday life.

Endline research shows that 62% of those regularly exposed to the show are now aware of sexual and reproductive rights for people with disabilities.

Liman Usman is blind actor - in our Hausa-language radio drama, he plays a sighted teacher.

“Playing a character of somebody that can see, whereas in the real sense I cannot see, is a morale booster for me.”

Thank you to all who joined us last night for the BBC Correspondents’ Charity Dinner.

Your support helped shine a light on the extraordinary work of Tina in Sierra Leone and Raksmey in Cambodia—two young journalists who began their careers with support from BBC Media Action and are now leading the change in their communities.

Both face enormous odds: underfunded media outlets, shrinking press freedom, and the personal toll of working in male-dominated, high-risk environments.

Yet they persist—reporting on issues that matter, helping their audiences make informed choices, and mentoring the next generation of journalists.

Their courage is a reminder of why press freedom and support for local media are more critical than ever.

“If I don’t report on these issues—who will?”

In a remote part of Cambodia, Raksmey is quietly redefining what’s possible for indigenous women in journalism.

She covers land rights, education access, deforestation and cultural preservation—issues too often ignored. Her work at a local women’s media centre brings the voices of marginalised communities to light, often at great personal risk.

Raksmey’s commitment is fierce—but so are the challenges. Shrinking donor funding now threatens the change she creates through her work, while putting the futures of young reporters and communities like hers at risk.

Her story is a powerful reminder of why investing in young, local journalists matters.

At our BBC Correspondents’ Charity Dinner this evening, we are proud to share the journeys of Tina in Sierra Leone and Raksmey in Cambodia—two young women whose careers in journalism began through mentoring from BBC Media Action.

Despite working in vastly different contexts, both are confronting inequality, injustice and censorship with courage and clarity—using media to inform, empower and change lives in their communities.

Their brave stories remind us that truth-telling is never easy—but is essential for change.

“There are dangers for young journalists like me. We face it every day.”

In Freetown, Sierra Leone, Tina has used her platform as a radio presenter to tackle misinformation, mentor young journalists, and advocate for girls’ education.

She began as a BBC Media Action trainee and has gone on to present national radio shows that help vulnerable youth find work or return to school. But progress hasn’t been easy. She’s faced harassment, underfunded newsrooms, and a media landscape that often sidelines women.

Still, Tina remains passionate about the power of journalism to inform and uplift her community.

US government funding cuts have triggered a global media crisis. Outlets are being forced to shut down or scale back, especially in conflict-affected and authoritarian contexts.

The new report by three media development consortia led by BBC Media Action, Free Press Unlimited, Internews Europe – and supported by the European Commission – highlights the threats and calls for urgent donor action.

In South Sudan, radio stations are lifelines for delivering accurate news, education, and entertainment – but they are fighting to stay on air.

Many rely on humanitarian and development aid - and recent USAID cuts have impacted their survival.

We are helping to bridge the gap for radio stations across the country, offering technical training, equipment support, mentorship, and rebroadcasting programmes. But it is a drop in an ocean.

“I was trained by BBC Media Action back in April 2024. I’ve learned so much, like how to write creative briefs, edit audio, and properly conduct interviews”, says radio producer Andy Deulong-Male.
