Buddy was five years old. A French bulldog left in the care of a relative while his owner was away. He never came home.
Over three weeks Luke Walker, 23, of Birkenhead, repeatedly beat and strangled the dog in his care โ all because Buddy had soiled his flat.
Walker admitted punching Buddy in the ribs, to the body and to the head. He admitted suffocating him with a pillow. He admitted kicking him. He told Buddy's owner he had heard the dog's ribs crack. He described battering him within an inch of his life.
On September 10, 2025 โ after an argument with his father left him in a rage โ Walker returned to his flat, found faeces and urine and attacked Buddy again. He punched him repeatedly to the body and head. He returned to his bed and continued to punch him. He kicked him twice. Buddy was so badly injured he could no longer walk. Walker placed a pillow over him. Buddy struggled. Walker eventually stopped.
Buddy passed away on the cushions where Walker had left him.
The following day Walker called Buddy's owner and told her the dog had died โ claiming he didn't know how. When she arrived she found injuries to Buddy's spine, ribs, front and back legs. His left hindlimb was twisted the wrong way. Blood was found on sheets in the flat.
Walker pleaded guilty to two offences under the Animal Welfare Act and one count of criminal damage. He told the RSPCA he had anger issues he had never sought help for.
RSPCA Inspector Anthony Joynes described Buddy's death as truly appalling โ the result of an angry violent man taking out his rage on a defenceless dog.
The sentence? 17 months in prison โ suspended for 18 months. 150 hours unpaid work. 20 rehabilitation days. A lifetime ban on keeping dogs.
Buddy cried out in pain. Buddy struggled under a pillow. Buddy died alone on a cushion.
And the man who killed him will not spend a single day behind bars.
