We did it šŸ„¹ your friendly neighbourhood big orange and me have officially qualified for the British Dressage Quest Semi-Finals.

This is our first ever season going affiliated and to have the D&H Championships to look forward to and the Quest Semi Finals is so fun!!

Itā€™s cliche these days to say a trip ā€œchanged your lifeā€, but thatā€™s exactly what trails did for me two years ago.

A gift to myself for my 30th birthday turned into a deep reflection, rejuvenation, confidence-building, wild-moor restoring 4 days and I vowed Iā€™d save up and return.

Iā€™m heading back next week, this time taking the gorgeous drive down to Dartmoor and partnering with on some exciting activities designed for a restorative solo trip. I feel creative and excited to share it with you ā¤ļø

WOW. New affiliated personal best by over 4%! 68.6% šŸ˜±I am floored, what a way to end the very last day of qualifying for the British Dressage - Quest Club semi finals.

Thank you SMP EVENTS Golden Cross Equestrian Centre for putting on a lovely, welcoming show.

So glad I gave Quest a go and would encourage it to anyone. The difference between the beginning of our first season and the end has just been huge.
British Dressage Quest

I went wrong in my first test, so I think weā€™d have been on 67%. If I told you I went up the final centre line and saluted the ā€œjudgeā€ facing A instead of C would you believe me šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

What a lovely comment to recieve - ā€œhe tries for youā€ šŸ„¹ yes he does. A couple of little rears in our warm up with some spookiness and tension from other horses, and yet now we know each other so well, we know what to do when it gets too much.

He did me so proud today. Almost cried at the end of my second test šŸ˜­šŸ„°

I want to talk to you about my teaspoon of honey theory.

Whilst visiting a vineyard recently, I learned that, on average, bees make around 1/2 a teaspoon of honey in their lifetime.

My immediate thought was to imagine a jar of honey. How small half a teaspoon seemed. Then I thought about the size of a bee, the intricacies of making honey and how mass-produced honey is actually sometimes diluted with sugars etc to allow sellers to make more.

Suddently, half a teaspoon for one bee feels totally reasonable.

It made me think about our relationship to horses and social media. We can spend years working on one magical thing with our horses, our half teaspoon of honey.

But then we go online and suddently we see ā€œhoney jarsā€ everywhere. Someone doing bigger, bolder, more ā€œimpressiveā€ things with their horse.

But hereā€™s the thing. Honey is still honey. Your homemade magic is still magic.

So keep working away on your half a teaspoon. Do it slow, do it with care, do it with joy.

Make your own magic count, donā€™t let the honey jars of social media fool you.

Schooling in the rain today, hereā€™s what we got up to:

1. Warming up with some spiralling in and out on a circle. Always a great reminder of where heā€™s falling in and out and where heā€™s on or off my leg, plus our suppleness and balance.

Wearing a RVRC by RevolutionRace waterproof jacket, this was gifted to me in in 2021 I think and whilst I love a few of my jackets, this one is unbeatable in true downpours. The trousers are cheap Regatta Great Outdoors ones from my teenage years, theyā€™ve never let me down!

2. Practicing part of the Intro 1: 2 half 10m circles over x, transition to walk for 1 horseā€™s length, trot, 20m circle at E, then another transition to walk between K and A before the free walk.

3. Practising changing the gear within the pace: slower / smaller trot to bigger trot. On watching this back, I might need to get a bit more obvious šŸ¤£

4. Practising our canter transitions. Our walk-trot and trot-walk are lovely now and canter-trot is much more balanced, so honing in on the upward transition now.

You can see the first transition I did was messy, so immediately came back to trot, but because Iā€™ve been doing quite a few kind of transitions he was running on and we were losing the balance. Therefore, I brought everything back down to walk, rebalanced, then walk trot, canter for a much nicer transition.

I always know when Harley is particularly up for a ride because he appears here after I put his saddle on (I always do saddle then bridle so he can keep eating if he wants to for longer).

This is my favourite view as Iā€™m putting my own hat and boots on, nothing better than a horse who says, ā€œIā€™m ready! Whatā€™s the plan today?ā€

Heā€™s feeling jolly, relaxed and happy after his quiet week, a great reminder that a few more days off than normal can work wonders when youā€™ve had a busy few weeks / months.

Knowing your horseā€™s body language can make grooming and tacking up a really useful check in. Standing the same way? Any sensitivity? Ears forward, relaxed face? Any turning away or evasion? Etc.

Best animals ever and no better teammate ā¤ļø
