Kane FM has evolved from a pirate radio station to its present legal status of a not-for-profit community radio station based in Guildford and broadcasting the surrounding area via 103.7FM and through the internet stream.
Kane FM is only the third pirate station in the UK to gain legal status through Ofcom, the communications regulator in the UK.
Over 12+ years, the station has recruited approximately 150 volunteers that enthusiastically give up their time to make Kane FM work. About 25% of the volunteers are presently unemployed and Kane FM is giving them opportunities they would otherwise not have.
Kane FM is about roots and dance music of all genres that is not proportionally represented on commercial stations. It provides a platform for new talent, addresses inclusion and engagement of young people – and the lack thereof – with numerous ongoing youth outreach projects. The station is run entirely by volunteers who strive to improve the technical, social, cultural and artistic skills of themselves and the local community at large.
Through independent music, Kane FM volunteers work toward breaking down barriers within the community and engage young people in culture and the arts through the medium of radio.
We work in partnership with other organisations to enhance the skills and life chances of hard to engage young people.
All revenue from advertising, funding appeals and fund raising events goes back into the running of Kane FM and its projects.
Projects:
Music and broadcasting platform and education hub.
Community integration through music and local broadcasting.
Engaging the culturally under-represented and socially deprived.
Giving those not engaging in the main stream activities a voice.
Improving community cohesion.
Planning to deliver alternative learning programmes for unemployed youth and those at risk of offending.
