Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful time whatever it is you’ve been up to, but if this time of year is difficult for whatever reason, I’m thinking of you too. ❤️🎄

I know the channel has been pretty quiet this year but I promise I have stuff filmed, I just need to find the time (AKA willpower) to edit. Yes, there will be Sylvester content coming soon, and yes, it will include fixing that coolant leak.

Removed the gearbox on the Scirocco this weekend ready for Claire Atkinson Associates to work her magic and give it a much needed overhaul. It’s only a job that’s needed doing since I bought the car 6 years ago.

Funny how I’ve taken out countless gearboxes at work on much bigger and far more complex vehicles, but the thought of doing this has terrified me all that time. In the end, it was an absolute doddle. And yes, I really need to clean up the underside of that bonnet.

Pour one out for the Lomax roof, folks. Finally laid to rest yesterday, in multiple pieces, in the skip. A bit sad as once I started dismantling it I realised just how much effort my great uncle had put into making it, but he did authorise its removal, and it was taking up valuable space in the unit. RIP Lomax roof. 🫡

It’s forecast to snow next week, so now that I’ve got a *quattro* (said in the same style of Jaaaag or Fooowwrrrd) I decided I should probably get some decent tyres. I went for the Vredestein Quatrac Pro+, an all-season but should still be good enough for the snow. I’d love to say I did loads of research leading up to my decision but it’s purely because they were a hell of a lot cheaper than CrossClimates but still had decent ratings, and I’m tight.

Of course, now I’ve gone to all the effort of fitting these, it won’t snow at all next week, so… you’re welcome! 😃

Just a quick Women Driver's Social Club appreciation post. Some of you may have noticed (probably haven’t) that I’ve been a bit quieter on the socials and stuff this year. I took a bit of a step back when I realised my relationship with social media wasn’t a healthy one. I’ve also not always been feeling up to going to car stuff this year, probably because I was bloody everywhere last year and wore myself out. But I’ve not felt that pre-event ‘oh god I don’t want to go’ anxiety with any of the WDSC events I’ve been to this year (just the ‘oh god I’m going to make a tit of myself and they’ll all think I’m a weirdo’ anxiety, which is fine, because they already know I’m a weirdo)

Every time I come away from an event with these wonderful women it doesn’t even feel like I’ve been with a car club, it feels like I’ve just had a great weekend with some mates. I never thought a weekend at the NEC would leave me feeling good in any capacity, and not just like I’ve been run over by an old Routemaster. My heart felt warm on the drive home on the M1 on the Sunday. But that also could’ve been heartburn from the curry we had.

A weekend spent with fantastic company was just what I needed, and I’m feeling inspired again to crack on with the Lomax and the Golf. Will this inspiration make it to the weekend? Who knows! Stay tuned to find out!

In case you were wondering (nobody was wondering), yes, you can fit an Austin J40 in the back of an Audi A4.

Sadly not mine, but that of Clare, a fellow Women Driver's Social Club member. Collected yesterday to deliver to the NEC for this weekend’s Classic Motor Show! If you’re attending the show this weekend, make sure to stop by the WDSC stand in Hall 5 to meet 8 Ball Paul and friends. We’ve got some pretty special guests on the stand too! 😉

I love local classic car shows, because you never know what’s going to turn up on the day. For example, I never imagined I’d see a Studebaker Avanti in a cricket club field on an overcast day in West Yorkshire. It was claimed to be the fastest production car in the world when it was released in 1962!

Seems like I only ever go to car shows that are miles away down south, so it makes a nice change to be at one only 20 minutes down the road! Out at the West Yorkshire Hot Rod & Custom Car Show - Flat Caps & Ferrets in George. He is longer than the Mustang…

I bought a trailer to transport ‘the’ Lomax… I never specified which Lomax… 😶

When an original, unbuilt Lomax kit with all the spares I need and more comes up for sale on Marketplace, and it’s only 15 minutes down the road, how could I say no?!

A big thank you to Graham the seller, and for letting us have a look around his workshop! He’s got some incredible cars in his collection. The Citroen army truck was fully restored by him after it was rescued from a French farm in 2007, where it’d been stood since 1966 after the engine seized. It even has the original French tachograph book in it, documenting the journeys it made in the 50s and 60s. The SM is another one of his restorations, believed to be one of the first 400 made. It’s also for sale, if you fancy being like UP n DOWN. The DS is also for sale, and was restored in 2012 and looks immaculate. Graham said if I ever need any more parts for the Lomax to give him a call, so no doubt I’ll be back!

Yesterday I was not at RADwood to defend my title (despite the fact there was a white Mk2 Scirocco in the Show & Shine), but I was at Bicester Heritage again, this time to take part in Hero Era Rally’s Rally for the Ages! A big thank you to Sara for being my navigator for the day.

It’s a good job this one is for beginners, as we certainly were 😅. Somehow we managed to balls it up right from the start by utterly failing to complete the first two tests, resulting in us having the maximum penalty before we were even out on the road. At the halfway point we were 62nd out of 62 cars, but by the end of the day we managed to move up to 58th (if my calculations are correct, since the final results only listed cars from 1990 or earlier, so we were listed as 45th out of 48). But we had fun, so that’s all that matters!

The Women Driver's Social Club was well represented too, and we managed to get some group photos in front of the Hero Era building. A big well done to WDSC member Niamh for finishing 2nd in class in her Alvis!

Between this and Rally W, my future as a rally driver isn’t looking very promising… hillclimbing went alright though, so maybe I’ll go with that. 😆

34 years ago today, George was first registered on the road. The logbook has changed hands 18 times since then. That’s a lot of previous owners and bodges to sort through! We’re getting there though, slowly. I’m too stubborn/stupid to give up on this old bastard just yet. Happy birthday George! 🎂

Apologies for the radio silence on here over the last month or so, it’s been a somewhat chaotic time! Finally had some time to relax a bit this past weekend as it was the Women Driver's Social Club northern weekender. I decided to take George this year, despite his protests in a B&Q car park two weeks before when he refused to proceed, but that’s another story.

As always, it was a brilliant weekend with a great bunch of people and a great mix of cars! Saturday started with a trip to NY500, followed by a drive through the North York Moors, including some pretty steep 31% inclines. George is more akin to a Shire horse in that he won’t be the quickest up there, but he’ll pull you up when he needs to. Then on Sunday we took a drive through Filey, turning heads by the seafront, then back inland for a chilled out afternoon in Thornton-le-Dale, not least without posing in front of Mathewson’s first.

George’s first camper van trial was a success too! I hate sleeping in tents because there’s always too much noise, so a car longer than the Ever Given container ship seemed like the perfect solution. I accidentally left a back door slightly ajar on the first night so it was freezing, but the second night was lovely and cozy. Much better than a tent!

The first four photos are mine, while the rest are courtesy of the lovely WDSC members. Already looking forward to next year’s weekenders!
