For our final Commoning the Programme 2 workshop the cohort will work with Kasey Ball-Scott.

Kasey Ball-Scott is a Collections & Engagement curator at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery. Originally from Toronto, Canada, and with a background in Museum Studies, she manages the care of the Fine and Decorative Art Collections, coordinates exhibitions, and works with community partners on creative art and heritage projects. She loves art, animals, and terrible Toronto sports teams.

In this workshop…
The Inclusive Curator’s toolkit – Programming & Digital Access
This workshop will explore the modern curator’s toolkit for effective community-focused practice. Learn how Hastings Museum & Art Gallery is leading the way in collaborative cultural programming and how you can influence art and heritage projects to be more inclusive. We will start behind the scenes, learning how the museum makes programming decisions. Following this, we will look at ways to remove bias from artist briefs, ensuring all opportunities attract the broadest spectrum of voices and ideas. We will then learn how to measure proposals against set criteria to guarantee that digital outputs are accessible, sustainable, and meet professional standards. The impact of digital accessibility will be investigated through live demonstrations of 3D object scanning, illuminating how this technology breaks down barriers to unlock museum collections for global audiences.

This week our Commoning the Programme 2 cohort will work with Rachel Nahum.

I am a qualified teacher and youth and community worker with extensive knowledge and experience of working with and teaching children and young people both in school and in the community.
In recent years I have become an online safety expert, developing and delivering training for professionals, parents/carers and children/ young people about internet safety.

These sessions constantly evolve to reflect the audience and latest trends with online behaviour including: The dark web, Artificial Intelligence (AI) especially within child sexual abuse materials (CSAM), gaming and compulsion/addiction to digital world.

Young people co-write and deliver these online safety sessions.

In this workshop…
In our workshop we explore how the internet has changed communication and explore how we can all be safer online.

We will explore the 5 themes of online safety:
Contact – Who do you interact with?
Content – What you view, share (upload) and download
Conduct – How you behave online (including cyberbullying)
Commercial – scams, financial gain, advertising and more
Overuse – Are we using technology too much?
What are the themes for you? Your friends? For people in your family?

We will look at the similarities and differences between us and how we may all be using technology differently.

We will then extend this discussion to look at how different ages, generations, groups may relate to and use technology, looking for both their similarities and differences.

We will think about how you learnt to be safer online and how you could offer advice to others.

We will also explore how we will share this project online with others. How could we share content? How do we promote? How can we make contact with people? (from advertising, booking to experience).

This week our Commoning the Programme 2 cohort will meet Jilliene Sellner.

Jilliene Sellner is a Canadian visual and sound artist living in Hastings for the last 13 years. She works with sound and has performed and had installations in the UK, Turkey, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Jilliene explores the relationship between colonialism, the environment and culture, especially focusing on the global South, and gender. Her art practice is often working in collaboration creating soundscape compositions.

Jilliene founded Heya Collective, in 2018, which is a collective of herself and three female sound artists from Turkey, Lebanon and Egypt performing across the internet and in-person. Jilliene has just started work on a sound and fragrance/perfume project funded by the Arts Council of England.

In this workshop…
We will look at how to get the most out of working together as a collective on a creative project. Who is leading? You all are! How does that work? How are decisions going to be made? What do you as a group want to achieve with this project? The session will help you to think about what you are interested in communicating with this project and how to figure that out together.

This Wednesday we are back with a bang with some more creative fun at Pick 'N' Mix. To tie-in with bonfire night, we will be showing young people the process of making interactive displays using a free open-source piece of software called TouchDesigner and playing with some digital fireworks!

In case you or someone you know wants to, but hasn't attended a Pick 'N' Mix session before:

Pick 'N' Mix runs in collaboration with Hastings Youth Commons and their respective youth club. These sessions are aimed to inspire young people to get into creative tech and understand the skills involved in an informal approach to learning.

🕕 Wednesday 5th November (5:30 - 6:30pm)
📍 The Observer Building, Hastings, TN34 1DT

Any questions about the sessions or how to get involved, feel free to email [email protected]

Tonight ‘Commoning the Programme 2’ starts with a workshop facilitated by Gail Borrow from ExploreTheArch.

ExploreTheArch explores people who lived before us whose migration stories reflect life today.

We use a physical object to create connection between the historical person and us.

We work with digital media to explore the women and men who travelled, made decisions and enriched the lives of others in their new homes.

In this workshop...
We will explore the power of a connecting physical object as entry points into a story.

We will develop the stories to include ourselves.

We will use digital media to tell a connecting story to others.
