The first years of a child’s life are critical for cognitive, emotional and physical development.

Babies' brains are growing and changing faster than at any other stage, and now research shows that shared reading has a big role to play 👇

📚 Shared reading supports children's social and emotional development.

Children who are read to from their earliest years are more likely to develop secure relationships with their parents or carers and have better mental wellbeing and social skills.

📚 Shared reading routines create positive habits.

When reading is part of a child's daily routine, it helps them feel secure and provides comfort - and it's the moment of connection that matters, not how good their parent or carer is at reading!

📚 Shared reading also helps children to overcome disadvantage.

Children who are read to from their earliest years are more likely to overcome socio-economic inequalities - research shows those growing up in poverty have a better chance of moving out of poverty as adults if they are read to as young children.

Not every child shines in the classroom, and that’s okay.

Confidence grows when children feel seen and celebrated for who they are, not just how they perform on paper.
