Sailing has a wonderful habit of using single words to describe whole aerodynamic concepts.
Luff is a perfect example. It’s the leading edge of a sail — but it’s also what happens when the sail loses lift as you steer too close to the wind.
That gentle flutter isn’t failure — it’s feedback. Learning to read the luff is learning to listen to the boat.
We’ve put together a plain-English guide to 80+ sailing terms for new sailors (and those pretending they already know). https://pmrsailing.uk/sailing-lessons/Sailing-Terms.html
