Philip M Russell Ltd

Philip M Russell Ltd 1:1 Private Tuition in Maths & Science at GCSE & A Level, both online or from a dedicated Laboratory Philip M Russell Ltd, is a small private teaching company.

We specialise in 1:1 tuition both online using services like Zoom and Webex and in person in our dedicated Laboratory/classroom. We teach Mathematics from KS2 through GCSE to A Level where we teach Mathematics and Further Mathematics. In our Science Laboratory we teach Biology, Physics, Chemistry and General Science from GCSE to A Level. The Online teaching is done from our TV Studio. Private Tuit

ion only takes us some of our time , so when not teaching we create educational science videos which are used throughout the world in many schools. Philip M Russell Ltd is a proud sponsor of Going Green which is a weekly video and Podcast on Climate Change and mitigation.

Sailing has a wonderful habit of using single words to describe whole aerodynamic concepts.
Luff is a perfect example. It’s the leading edge of a sail — but it’s also what happens when the sail loses lift as you steer too close to the wind.
That gentle flutter isn’t failure — it’s feedback. Learning to read the luff is learning to listen to the boat.
We’ve put together a plain-English guide to 80+ sailing terms for new sailors (and those pretending they already know). https://pmrsailing.uk/sailing-lessons/Sailing-Terms.html

Fatbergs cost millions to remove and cause sewage spills into our rivers — yet they’re almost entirely preventable.
Simple actions at home make a real difference: • Never pour fats down the sink • Follow the “3 Ps” rule • Avoid flushing wipes • Bin food waste properly.
Small behavioural changes = big environmental wins. https://goinggreenpodcast.blogspot.com/2025/12/what-can-we-do-to-prevent-fatbergs.html

As budgets tighten and specialist science teachers become harder to recruit, practical work is quietly disappearing from many classrooms.
At Philip M Russell Ltd, our dedicated teaching lab provides what students need most: hands-on experiments, real data, and confident understanding — both in person and online.
Practical science isn’t a luxury. It’s essential.

Dishwasher tablets are a modern convenience hiding a complex chemical footprint.
Many contain surfactants harmful to aquatic life, unnecessary fragrances, and “water-soluble” plastic films that may pass straight into rivers.
Switching to dishwasher powder, eco-certified tablets, and smarter usage cuts pollution without sacrificing clean dishes.
Sustainability isn’t about perfection – it’s about better everyday choices.

Would it be possible to foil on the Thames?
Foiling demands clear water, depth, space, and predictable conditions — all things that rivers struggle to provide.
While a handful of wide, quiet reaches could theoretically support wind foiling or e-foils, the Thames’ variable depth, traffic, and hidden hazards make it a challenging and potentially unsafe environment for foiling.
Inland rivers are superb for learning, coaching, and traditional dinghy sailing — but foiling is usually better left to open water venues designed for speed and clearance.
Sometimes the smartest seamanship decision is recognising where a technology doesn’t belong.

Britain’s Greenest Christmas? Possibly.
Britain’s electricity system operator predicts that Christmas Day 2025 could see the lowest carbon intensity ever recorded on the network—if current mild, windy conditions continue.
Lower demand combined with strong renewable generation highlights how far the UK energy system has shifted. Wind and other low-carbon sources are no longer marginal—they are foundational.
It’s a reminder that: • Decarbonisation is already happening • System design matters as much as individual behaviour • Clean energy transitions often arrive quietly
Sometimes progress looks like a calm day, a steady breeze, and a grid doing its job well. https://goinggreenpodcast.blogspot.com/2025/12/could-this-be-britains-greenest.html

Subtle colour changes are where real chemical understanding lives.
Using time-lapse and macro techniques, we can capture indicator transitions and precipitate formation that students often miss in real time. The result? Clearer observations, stronger links between theory and practice, and reusable teaching resources that work just as well online as they do in the lab.
Sometimes the smallest changes teach the biggest ideas.

Genetic inheritance is one of the most conceptually challenging topics for students — and one of the most rewarding when taught well.
Model organisms such as fruit flies, pea plants, zebrafish, and mice allow learners to see inheritance patterns emerge across generations. They turn Punnett squares from abstract diagrams into testable predictions and introduce real scientific thinking into the classroom.
This approach doesn’t just support GCSE and A-Level biology — it mirrors how modern genetics research is actually done.
🧬 Teaching genetics through model organisms helps students understand not just what happens, but why it happens.

What Philip M Russell Ltd does.

Philip M Russell Ltd, offer 1:1 private Tuition in Maths and Science at GCSE and A level. Plenty of lab equipment to carry out all the experiments required. Fully qualified experienced teachers. We start at KS2 and go through right up to A level.

Philip M Russell Ltd also makes Science documentary videos. It all started when a few students wanted some videos on this and that and now we have nearly 200 videos on the GCSE and A level science syllabuses.

In addition we use much of our video skills to help others. We use this video equipment to do live broadcasts of organ concerts and create videos for third parties who need a producer, director, director of photography, cameraman, sound recordist, editor or colourist. Our small team make cost effective videos for wedding, small companies and some larger institutions
