A book created for the generations coming behind. The mother of our customer, was in the French resistence during the war, imprisoned in France then Germany, liberated and sent to Sweden, before being sent back to France.

The letters back to her father were written, on anything available, from napkins, grease proof paper cloth and also paper. In small small handwriting nothing wasted on both sides. The two letters from Germany in German and by a German soldier/officer and the rest in French.

A scrapbook was created, by her father, and bearing in mind, at the time, the outcome of the war or a reunion between them was not known, and stuck down with plasters (easier to get hold off than anything else we presume) and possibly the hardest technically to date scan and postscan project for Graham.

Between JH and me (Eva) we then worked to create this amazing legacy, to make it worthy of its history and true to the original. Keeping the ink stains and the thread of the letters.

Even a note from Charles de Gaulle and medal certificate included.

The book has been printed in six copies and the words when we parted was from JH “above my expectations”.

Just before the Regatta, Phil Mercer from BBC Berkshire radio came and visited us at Henley Scan. Phil and Graham spent time in the studio talking reel to reel audio, family, memories and all that. Henley Royal Regatta 114 years apart. For one of our earliest customers, we archived old photographs from Henley. Among them this fabulous photograph from the 1911 Henley Royal regatta. Graham Gilmour dipped down and even skimmed the water in his Boxkite. And the Red Arrows flew over Friday night. So one photo we took, one we scanned.
