Debra Padgett has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in His Majesty’s Birthday Honours for services to Biomedical Science in the NHS. Throughout her career, she has championed quality improvement, service transformation and workforce development, while playing a key role in advancing pathology services and supporting the delivery of COVID-19 testing during the pandemic.
Beginning her career in microbiology after graduating from the University of Sunderland, Debra progressed through a range of biomedical science roles before becoming Clinical Pathology Lead at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Alongside her NHS career, she has made significant contributions to the profession nationally through the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), serving as President in 2022 and recently being appointed Vice President.
Passionate about raising the profile of biomedical science, Debra sees the award as recognition of the collective efforts of the many colleagues and teams she has worked alongside throughout her career. She remains committed to championing the profession and supporting the next generation of biomedical scientists.
Reflecting on this achievement, Debra said: “I am deeply honoured and humbled to receive the British Empire Medal. Whilst this recognition carries my name, it is one I share with the many talented colleagues and teams I have had the privilege to work alongside, and I hope it helps shine a light on the extraordinary contribution that biomedical scientists and the wider pathology workforce make to patient care every single day.”

Her commitment to delivering high-quality pathology services, supporting her colleagues and driving improvements for patients has been evident throughout her career. We are immensely proud to see her dedication and contribution to the NHS recognised through this honour.”
