The legendary Shure SM7B.
This microphone is very well used for podcasts and radio broadcasting but became more widely used in music recording when Michael Jackson used it to record most of the vocals on the Thriller album.
We will be using the is as our main vocals microphone.

The Rode M5 is a highly reliable Condenser Microphone. This microphone has many uses but for us it will be our main choice for drum overheads and acoustic guitar. The M5 had a pretty neutral but detailed clean sound , perfect for high frequencies.
You’ll notice the laser pen attached to the microphone, this is to help measure exactly where the mic is pointing which in turn helps with any phase issues!

This week we have the AKG D112 Mkii
Probably the most well known microphone for recording Kick Drum. It’s used on stages and studios all over the world.
The green rubber strip is an easy identifier for this mic and is there to protect the grille.
In the studio we use it on kick drums and bass amps. AKG say it would sound great with Trombone but we are yet to try that out!

Written and recorded on Valentine’s Day, “See It Through” is the first JackΩ release with vocals.

It’s good for artists to release constantly and each month we hope to release something different. This month was a first for vocals, next month will be the first remix.

This week we have a look at the Rode NT1-A.
Released in the ‘90’s and still considered one of the quietest mics on the market, this is used by beginners and professional studios alike.

At our studio we like to use it on vocals and piano but because it is such a colourless sounding mic, it can be used on any instrument.

This week it’s the turn of the SM58. Basically the same mix as the SM57 but with its own silver grille.

The SM58 is probably the most famous mic around.
It’s used at every event across the globe.

It’s predominantly a live vocal mic for use on stage but we use it for recording rough vocal demos and scratch takes before moving onto a more advanced microphone for the final vocal recording.

welcome to a new series where we show off our favourite microphones from the studio.

First off, the Classic, industry standard SM57. Originally developed with classical music recordings in mind, the SM57 became the go to microphone for Rock and Pop music.

In our studio we use the SM57 on Guitar Amps and Snare Drums and Toms, although they can be used on whatever the client wants.
