The world’s second car 🚗 is the Daimler Motor Carriage, built in 1887 by German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. It followed Karl Benz’s three-wheeled Patent-Motorwagen and was the first four-wheeled, gasoline-powered vehicle. The car used Daimler’s compact single-cylinder engine, known as the “Grandfather Clock,” which was mounted on a modified horse-drawn carriage. It could reach speeds of around 18 km/h (11 mph) and marked a major leap in automotive development by proving that a practical, petrol-powered vehicle could be built using a conventional carriage layout. This innovation helped pave the way for modern automobiles and led to the creation of what would later become Mercedes-Benz.
