The one who showed you how to properly cut in. Who explained why prep matters more than the paint. Who let you make a mistake and then calmly explain what went wrong and how to fix it.

It might have been an employer, a colleague or someone you met on a decorating forum.

Mental health in the decorating trade doesn't get talked about enough. Most decorators work alone. There's no office. No team around you. No one to notice if a bad week turns into a bad month. You're managing clients, chasing invoices, planning jobs, buying materials, dealing with problems on site — and doing all of it without switching off, because the van is the commute and the commute is the job.

This week is Men's Health Week. And in a trade that is overwhelmingly male, where the pressure to get on with it is built into the culture, it feels like the right moment to say something simple. It's okay not to be okay.

Because our industry deserves recognition.

For years I've watched decorators produce incredible work, develop amazing skills and take huge pride in their craft, often without the recognition they deserve.

I've always believed that if we want to raise standards, we need to celebrate excellence.

The Trade Decorator Awards aren't about saying who's the best. They're about recognising great work, creating a benchmark for excellence and inspiring others to aim higher.
