What made me leave employment after 16 years to go self employed.

The place I have been at today was my first freelance work, I never forget the first day putting my chisels on the banker back in July 2021, that feeling in your stomach. No turning back now James it’s down to you to make it work.

I had enough of been in management & had always still grafted on the tools on a weekend. Sat talking with Harriet about my crazy idea that they maybe a gap in the stone market for a freelance stone dresser working on a self employed fully insured CIS Registered basis. We decided to go for it.

Roll the clock forward 4 years now I honestly can’t believe where my hammer & chisel has taken me. This was way before social media, it was never about that for me. I have had it said to me so many times how come you always graft like you do. You must be skint or you’re not charging enough but I LOVE my job. It’s mine and what I have built from nothing.

The social media has really helped with new work coming in and thank you to all the messages & offers of work coming in, looking for stone to match in for jobs or advice on stone related subjects.

The support i receive from all of you on here is sometimes overwhelming to reply to all the comments as I do it all myself, 4.40 in a morning am sat at my kitchen table replying to comments & messages before heading out bash stone wind, rain or sun. I leave with my head held high everyday knowing I am building something amazing for my family in the future.

Dressing away today just thinking back to how i started I just wanted to write this for anyone thinking about going self employed. It’s not easy, but it’s best thing I ever did personally

I just didn’t have it in my arms to do another 2 pallets. For those who don’t work in stone it is the equivalent of 1/3 of an average house & also 12 tonnes in weight. Good think is the first load can still go out to the customer and I can do the rest when I come back from my jollys
