Windrush history is British history.
Too often, the story of African Caribbean communities in Britain is told as beginning with the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush in 1948. In reality, people of African and Caribbean heritage had been living, working, serving and helping to shape Britain for centuries before Windrush.
For many years, KLTV has been preserving and sharing the stories of the Windrush Generation and their descendants across Huddersfield, Kirklees and West Yorkshire. These histories are a vital part of our local heritage and deserve to be remembered, celebrated and passed on to future generations.
The Windrush On Tour 2026 Tapestry brings together the people, places, organisations and events that have shaped the African Caribbean experience in Huddersfield and Kirklees. It is a powerful community record of resilience, contribution, culture and legacy.
On 22 June, alongside the Huddersfield Seventh-Day Adventist Church, we will be proudly unveiling the tapestry to the local community as part of our Windrush commemorations. This special moment marks the beginning of the tapestry’s journey and celebrates the generations whose stories helped shape our town and region.
The tapestry will be available for public viewing later this summer, with details of exhibition venues and dates to be announced soon. Keep an eye on our channels for updates on where you can experience this unique piece of local Windrush history.
For now, check out this preview of some of the history that will be on display! How many different aspects of history can you name? Let us know in the comments!
We also want the community to help shape the project. Have your say by completing our survey and sharing the people, places and stories you believe should be represented.
