Meet the maker:
Nigel Martin is a luthier based on the south coast of England, specialising in the repair and construction of fretted string instruments. His work mainly utilises traditional hand and craft skills and in recent years Nigel has started to learn and incorporate more modern digital methods, including CAD design, CNC machining and 3d printing.
Nigel’s interest in instrument making began in early childhood, nurtured through regular guitar lessons from the age of seven. As a teenager, he secured a Saturday job at a local guitar shop, where he developed a deep appreciation for well-made instruments and the skills required to care for them. This experience sparked a lifelong commitment to the craft, which he has continued to develop through self-directed study and practical, hands-on learning.
Over the years, Nigel undertook voluntary internships at one of the UK’S only Gibson Service Centres, a specialist banjo workshop, and an independent guitar repair studio, where he gained experience in pickup winding, structural repairs, and fine restoration work. After completing a college course in Music Technology, he began building his first instruments independently, further refining his skills at the bench.
Seeking to formalise and deepen his knowledge, Nigel gained a place on the prestigious Master Luthier Programme at the Galloup School of Guitar Building & Repair in Michigan, USA. This intensive training developed his understanding of voicing, fine joinery, acoustic and electric construction methods, and traditional finishing techniques.
Since returning to the UK, Nigel has established True Notes — a full-time workshop offering careful repairs, historically informed restorations, custom instrument building, and bespoke CNC fabrication. His workshop has quickly gained a reputation as a trusted space for high-quality, sympathetic work, particularly on well-loved and musically significant instruments.
Nigel’s practice is guided by a respect for traditional techniques, sustainable craft, and the belief that good work takes time.
