🛰️ Mapping an Invasive Species Along the The River Gipping in Suffolk! 🌿

We’ve teamed up with The River Gipping Trust to track the spread of Himalayan Balsam — a fast-growing invasive plant that outcompetes native species and weakens riverbanks.

🚶‍♂️ Over 150 geolocated data points have already been collected along and upstream of Stowmarket.

📸 These images are now part of an interactive map designed to guide future conservation efforts.

Time to put your eagle eyes to the test! 🦅
Somewhere in this lush riverside scene hides a beautiful but harmful plant — Himalayan balsam, one of the UK’s most invasive species. It might look lovely, but it spreads rapidly and threatens our native wildlife.

🧠 Hint: Look for tall stems with pointed, serrated leaves in whorls, and you might just catch its pink flowers starting to bloom.

🌿✨ Using AI to Tackle Himalayan Balsam – One Image at a Time! ✨🌿

We’re training an AI model to spot and identify Himalayan balsam in the wild – like the plant in this photo. 📸✅

Why? While it may look attractive, Himalayan balsam is one of the UK’s most invasive non-native plants. It outcompetes native species, destabilises riverbanks, and spreads rapidly – especially along watercourses.

🧠💻 With this AI model, we aim to:
🔍 Automatically detect Himalayan balsam in images
📍 Extract precise geographical coordinates
🚨 Enable faster response and targeted removal

By combining ecology, machine learning, and field data, we’re creating a tool with real-world environmental impact.

The invasive Himalayan Balsam plant is now beginning to flower in its ‘spectacular’ pink bloom along the Gipping. Now is the time to pull it and destroy it. We have around five weeks before it forms seed buds spreading up to around 1,000 seeds per plant into and around the river. Whilst out walking this weekend look out for the balsam. Pull just one plant, and you will stop up to 1,000 plants growing next year. It only grows from seeds.
