Join our reporter Tom Howe for NEWSWAVE, your weekly rundown of the top stories happening across St Austell and surrounding areas.

In the latest episode, we join St Austell’s new Mayor, Councillor Colin Hamilton - sworn in following a Mayor Making ceremony at Holy Trinity Church on the 18th of June – who shares a bit about himself, his vision, and the future for the area with St Austell Town Council.

We check in with Helen Barden to hear the latest updates and campaigns from St Austell Library, and to explore how they continue making a difference in and around the community.

As well as that, we take a trip to the launch of Ride for Precious Lives 2025, as cyclists set off from Children's Hospice South West's Little Harbour, pedalling their way to Little Bridge House in Barnstaple, before finishing at Charlton Farm near Bristol – all while raising money for children and families living with life-limiting conditions.

If all that wasn’t enough, we hear from Grant Harrold, former Royal Butler to King Charles III and an etiquette expert, who offers us all a gentle (and very British) nudge back toward good old-fashioned table manners.

Tune in today at 13.00, or listen at any time on https://newswave.buzzsprout.com

🚨 UK Emergency Alert Test to mobile phones – Sunday 7 September, 3PM 🚨

πŸ“± What’s happening?
The UK Government will send a test emergency alert to mobile phones at 3pm on Sunday 7 September.
Phones will emit a loud siren and vibrate for 10 seconds, even if set to silent.
πŸ“Ά You do not need mobile data or Wi-Fi to receive the alert.

⚠️ Why this matters
The Emergency Alerts system warns of life-threatening events like extreme weather.
However, the test could expose hidden or concealed phones, putting victims of domestic abuse at risk.

πŸ”• How to opt out
You can turn off alerts on most phones.
πŸ“² Step-by-step instructions to do this here: gov.uk/alerts/opting-out
If alerts still come through, contact your device manufacturer.

🚫 According to Gov.uk website, you will NOT receive the alert if your device is:
β€’ Turned off
β€’ Connected to a 2G or 3G network
β€’ Wi-Fi only
β€’ Not compatible

πŸ“’ Please share widely
Help spread the word - especially to those experiencing and/or at risk of domestic abuse and those who support them.
You can also share this post to your own social media feeds.

Last weekend, 112 incredible cyclists took on the epic Ride for Precious Lives – covering three counties in just three days to support Children's Hospice South West! 🚲

They started at Little Harbour in St Austell, riding through Little Bridge House in Barnstaple, and crossing the finish line at Charlton Farm near Bristol on Sunday.

Together, they raised a whopping Β£320,000+ to help provide vital care and respite for children and families across the South West. This amazing charity relies almost entirely on donations, and this event proves just how powerful our community can be.

We were lucky enough to cheer the riders off on Friday morning!

There’s a bold and brilliant short film in the works - Ladron (meaning Thieves in Cornish) - and it’s breaking boundaries by being made largely in the Cornish language. 🌊πŸŽ₯

Janice Rose spoke with Liane Escorza from Schaumburg Films about this unique project that celebrates identity, language, and friendship in a powerful after-heist neo-noir story: https://www.mixcloud.com/chaosradiouk/liane-escorza-schaumburg-films-crowdfunder-040725/

πŸ’₯ Even more exciting? They’re casting now!
Schaumburg Films is looking for three actors to play:
πŸ”Ή Ruan – strong, brooding, and mysterious
πŸ”Ή Dale – quirky, loyal, and understated
πŸ”Ή Magda – fierce, layered, and unforgettable

πŸ“ Shooting in Cornwall, October 2025
🎭 Knowledge of Cornish is a plus, but not essential - just bring talent and passion!
