Opening the archives this 'National Day Of The Gong' to view the Rank 'Gongman' used at the start of all Rank films, many of which were . Four men have struck the gong that appeared on cinema screens - Carl Dane, Billy 'Bombardier' Wells, Phil Nieman & Ken Richmond

The gongs used in the sequence were props made of plaster or papier-mâché. The sound came from British percussionist James Blades OBE, striking a real gong called a tam tam that was much smaller than the prop.

50 years ago in 1976 the cast and crew of what was then simply titled 'Star Wars' spent a few weeks in mid-May and early June on H Stage when they . Lucasfilm utilised the biggest stage on the lot for scenes including the Grand Temple Throne Room, interiors of the Rebel Hangar and The Death Star attack briefing scene.

Celebrating her extraordinary career across cinema and theatre we were joined by close friends and family of Dame Maggie Smith, including her two sons Toby Stephens and Christopher Larkin, to officially unveil The Maggie Smith Stage at Shepperton Studios. The dedication marks an historic moment for the Studio and honours her longstanding association with both Shepperton and Pinewood, having filmed numerous productions across the two sites.
