If you were diagnosed with asthma would you be ashamed?
If you were diagnosed with diabetes would you be ashamed?
You wouldn't. It's a medical diagnosis that gives you an answer to symptoms you may have been having.
So why would you be ashamed when you're diagnosed with depression, anxiety, bipolar, borderline personality disorder or schizophrenia?
This is because we are programmed to see mental health as bad. It is not. My general practitioner and myself have some amazing conversations because I have become very aware of my conditions. I have depression, anxiety, PTSD and C-PTSD. I am not ashamed.
It doesn't make me worth less, it doesn't mean I can't help the clients I help. I am medicated and I am very self aware when things get bad.
If you are a mental illness sufferer, the issue is not you, you have an illness that can be managed with so many options that are available.
The day there is no shame or stigma around mental illness, I will rest easy knowing that my albeit small contribution has helped.
Have a great day 🩷🩷
