In the last Hadean podcast episode Mat is happy to welcome Dr Alexander Cummins back to the show to discuss his vast library’s worth of video lectures, research and articles on historical Cunning Craft and sorcery.

They discuss his research on historical Cunning traditions, the humours in food and drink, the Verum, and the manner in which Spirits are organised and work together in texts such as the Science of Nigromancy. Of course, they also hit on the use and application of stones, bones, words and herbs in our magic and have a fantastic talk on exactly why Dr Al loves the dirt-sorceries and divinations of Geomancy and how the chthonic light of spiritual malarchy brings illumination to our work.

Al Cummins is one of our authors, some of the titles he has written or co-written include Nazarth: Pillars of Gladness, The Starry Rubric and The Black Raven (with Brian Johnson).

Magick, and especially binding spells, have long been subversive acts, frequently employed by those denied more socially acceptable paths to justice – the marginalized and the oppressed. In The Little Book of Wicked Spells: Binding and Retribution Magick, M. Belanger offers nineteen spells, charms, and rhymes which are wholly modern, yet employ many time-honoured techniques with an eye toward restorative justice.

M. Belanger is the founder of House Kheperu, author of The Dictionary of Demons, and designer of the Watcher Angel Tarot, among numerous other works. A recognizable face on US and Canadian television for occult and paranormal expertise, Belanger has a degree in comparative religions, was a National Merit Scholar, and was nominated for a Shirley Jackson Award for work with Tenebrous Press.

Available as pamphlet, EPUB and Amazon kindle.

Two titles by the author and illustrator

He presents each of the Pentacles given in the Key of Solomon, precisely redrawn and with explanations of the divine names, the names of spirits, as well as the vesicles in English, Latin and Hebrew, in an attempt to make the individual’s use of the seals more effective. By presenting the pentacles in full the author hopes that people will be inclined to experiment more with them as the seals are able to bridge the gap between the high magic of angelic conjuration and divine names, and the folk magic which utilizes psalms and spiritual assistance for more day to day concerns.

The Greater Key of Solomon is arguably one of the most influential grimoires in modern magical practice; however, like so many of the older books of magic, over the years many of the images, symbols and sigils found in the book have become distorted and malformed by time and human error. In this volume author and illustrator S. Aldarnay has endeavoured to render the images found in the popular Mathers edition of the text clearly and cleanly, so that they might be of greater use to the modern magician, either as physical tools, or as a way of understanding the symbolic and ritualistic virtues of the objects contained within this famous magical text.

In Hoodoo Graveyard Sorcery, James Udung discusses entering and exiting the graveyard, how to ritually collect graveyard dirt, and how to create an ancestor altar. Included are recipes for Incense of the Dead, a protection mojo bag, and Goofer Dust.
The Graveyard is a place of power in Hoodoo Folk Magic. It is a place of spirit contact between our ancestors and us the conjurers. Within this amazing temple we are set apart from the everyday hustle and bustle of life, more connected with the spirits of the Dead and of Nature. As with every temple there are rules and regulations on how to enter, work and exit.

In Hoodoo Mojo Bags & Baby Dolls author James Udung describes the construction, preparation and use of these tools in this follow-up to his Hoodoo Graveyard Sorcery.
One of the essential tools used in Hoodoo folk practice is the mojo bag which acts as a container of magical force(s), similar to a spirit box or pot. They serve as amulets or better still as charm bags and are commonly used in hoodoo folk practice, with its origins rooted in West Africa. A Hoodoo Doll-Baby, Dolly, Poppet, Effigy, is a representation of a person made in the likeness of the target and is one of the most essential tools used in Hoodoo sympathetic sorcery.

Using as inspiration José Leitão’s work on the Iberian tradition of Saint Cyprian, artist Natalia Lee Forty has created a unique cartomancy deck meant to enter into conversation with the longstanding Lenormand and Sibilla tradition.

These are Bridge sized cards (57mm x 89mm), printed in colour on Eco Herbage stock with a matte finish, which includes a saddle-sewn booklet of 22 pages all presented in a tin case.

This 40-card deck uses as its foundation the Iberian baraja pack of cards, which contain 4 suits (batons, coins, swords, and cups) ranging from the Ace to 7, with three Court cards. For the illustrations, Natalia mainly surveyed José Leitão’s work on Cyprianic cartomancy, while also looking at other traditional fortunetelling and cartomancy decks.

Natalia has created the suits to sit within a Cyprianic landscape, both rural and somewhat urban. The suits are as follows: the batons reveal the outside world, the land, country. The cups reveal the inner world, contained within the home, the hearth. Conversely, the suit of coins and the suit of swords blurs these two contrasts, playing with the world contained in the home and that which is encountered outside the home.

"If one wishes to attain the science of medicine, therefore, it is necessary to elevate one's understanding in the science of the stars. Thus, this treatise called The Sphere of the Cosmos is sent ahead as a little ship of principles by means of which we reach more lofty things." — Cecco d’Ascoli

Written in the early fourteenth century and referencing many works which are now lost to history, the Commentary provides us with another missing piece in the early development of this tradition. Whilst challenging in its scope, this text is significant, containing important keys such as one of the first known attributions of the four kings of the directions, Oriens, Amaymon, Paymon, and Egyn, to the cardinal signs of the zodiac, as well as the first known appearance of the mysterious spirit Floron and his mirror.

Annulorum Experimenta: The Experiments of the Rings by Peter of Abano draws on the Arab to Latin transmission of image magic. The forty rings and other charms are attributed to the twenty-eight Mansions of the Moon, and unlike other ring texts are largely based around the creation of illusions. Almost all of the spirits mentioned in the creation of the rings and their activation are unique to this text, not occurring in any other known grimoire text.

Annulorum Experimenta is attributed to Peter of Abano, one of the most significant figures of the grimoire tradition. The likelihood of his authorship and his other magical works are discussed in detail in the introduction provided by Regulus Hess, which also contextualises the work historically. An appendix is also included of a translation of the Anelli di Pietro d’Abano, a unique vernacular tract related to the Annulorum Experimenta.

All six manuscripts have been consulted to provide the most complete edition of this grimoire, with text in both Latin and English, and all variants of the seals included in an appendix. A final appendix includes extracts from the Picatrix to facilitate the working of the material, should the reader wish to try this ring magic for themselves.
