Before you decide to veto one or the other, it's SO important to first understand how they work together and the part that each tactic plays in driving interest and sales.

Social media is brilliant for reach. It helps new people discover you, gets your name out there and gives you those quick bursts of visibility. It’s like a friendly wave that catches someone’s eye as they’re passing by.

Your newsletter is different. It's where you nurture people over time. It’s the slow burn that builds trust and gives people a more intimate place to engage with you. It’s more like popping the kettle on for a one to one.

The truth is, social media and newsletters both have their place.

Good marketing is rarely instant. It’s about guiding people from first seeing you online to feeling like they really know you. Social media brings them to the door. Your newsletter invites them to sit down and stay a while.

So if you’re ever wondering where to put your energy, remember - both have their place. It’s about showing up consistently, giving people value and letting your marketing grow with you for the long run.

Building a brand isn’t about followers - it’s about leading with your personality and your values.

It's not just a "thing" for influencers, it can be super powerful for business owners to build personal brands because - it's all about building meaningful and loyal connections!

I used to think LinkedIn was just for corporate job-hunters and humblebrag posts about promotions. Not a welcoming place for small business owners to build a personal brand, right? Wrong.

Over the past few years, I’ve discovered that LinkedIn can be a powerful (and surprisingly human) platform for showing up as you.

No awkward sales tactics, no fake authority vibes - just clarity, consistency and a bit of confidence.

If you do business with business - I've got a whole host of practical tips for how to build your personal brand on LinkedIn in my latest blog > https://marthawoodmarketing.com/how-to-build-your-personal-brand-on-linkedin/

Whether you're starting from scratch or just want to make it feel less cringey, this one’s for you.

I hope you've enjoyed my little mini series - thank you for indulging me, it's been lovely to reflect on the last few years. It really has been quite the journey!

So, what’s next for Martha Wood Marketing?

I’ve been working on practising what I preach when it comes to my own marketing. (See even Marketers struggle with putting their own Marketing to the bottom of the list!)

From growing my Three T’s monthly newsletter, to developing my blog, hosting training workshops and offering marketing consultancy for small business owners.

Year 4 is already panning out to be a good one. Full of collaborations and with some exciting projects in the pipeline (watch this space!)

It’s a joy to offer a varied mix of services, and having worked with so many brilliant business owners, I have a much deeper understanding of the kind of support that really makes a difference.

To everyone who’s been part of my journey so far, thank you.

Whether you’ve worked with me, referred me, shared my posts or cheered me on behind the scenes, it means the world. 🫶

Three years in, here’s what I know: building a business from scratch isn’t just about what you do - it’s about who you become in the process.

The learning curve is steep, the wins make the late nights worth it and the personal growth is just as big as the professional.

1. There’s no one way to do it. - Forget the cookie-cutter strategies. The best business is the one that fits your values, your energy and your goals.

2. Boundaries matter. They’re not about being difficult - they’re about being clear. With your time, your pricing and how you work. Everyone benefits.

3. Consistency beats perfection. You don’t need the perfect plan. You just need to keep showing up.

4. You’ll evolve. Let yourself. You won’t have it all figured out on day one. That’s fine. The best businesses grow with you.

If you're just starting your own business - or stuck in a rut don't be afraid to ask for help.

I had regular one-to-ones with Karen Bentley-Brown at Future Fixers in the early days. Now I join monthly peer support sessions with David Brown at DSB Training and Coaching.

Having people to talk things through with has been a game-changer!

If marketing is the thing that’s slowing you down, I offer 1:1 consultancy, mentoring, and workshops for small business owners who want to feel more in control and a whole lot clearer.

You don’t have to do it all alone. 🫶

Year 3.... the year I found my groove (and my lady balls)

By Year 3 of building my business, things started to click.

My confidence had grown. I had strong client results, glowing testimonials and a solid sense of what I was good at. But that doesn’t mean it was all smooth sailing.

Like so many women in business, I had to work at setting boundaries, backing myself and feeling okay about taking up space.

It wasn’t just about protecting my energy - it was about building a business that actually works for me (and serves my clients better too).

One big turning point came after letting go of a long-term client. The work was great, the results were brilliant - but the creeping demands and blurred boundaries? Not so much.

It was a tough decision, and their response stung. But it reminded me that boundaries are a form of respect - for myself and the work I do.

Here’s what I learnt:

1. Boundaries matter. You don’t owe more than what’s been agreed.

2. Your rates should reflect your value not just your time, but your expertise and energy.

3. Your network is everything. Treasure the good ones.

4. Stick to your values. Always. They’ll carry you through the big wins and the hard calls.

Year 3 felt more aligned. More intentional. More me. 🫶

Thanks to everyone who's been a part of this whirlwind of a journey.
Let's see where Year 4 takes us!

I started Martha Wood Marketing from my living room with a mediocre level of self-confidence, a lot of overthinking, a laptop, and a hope and a prayer.

By Year 2 I'd learnt SO. MUCH. including getting a brand photoshoot in the bag so I could stop asking friends to take photos of me in the park 😅.

After building a strong client base in Year 1, Year 2 was all about the graft.

Delivering results, refining my services, and figuring out how to keep all the plates spinning - while still building the kind of business I actually wanted.

That phrase “work on the business, not just in it”? It hit hard. Because like so many small business owners, I had to do both, at the same time, whilst also somehow trying to also eat 3 meals a day, drink enough water, exercise, get enough sleep, see my friends, family and all the rest.

It. Is. Hard. Work!

There were long days, late nights and plenty of podcasts in my ears while I tried to streamline my processes, keep learning, and stay visible. It was exhilarating and exhausting at the same time.

Eventually, I realised I needed help. But I didn’t want to manage a team - I still love the doing.

So I hired a brilliant VA to take the pressure off the admin side. Game changer.

Here’s what I learnt:

1. Doing everything yourself might work short-term, but it’s not sustainable.

2. Outsourcing is scary (even when you're usually the outsourced help!) - but unbelievably freeing when you find the right people.

3. Behind-the-scenes systems matter when you want to grow.

Year 2 wasn’t shiny. But it was solid. And it laid the groundwork for everything else that followed.
