The Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail officially opened in 2003, stretching a total of 84 miles (135km). It follows Hadrian's Wall, which was built by Emperor Hadrian Aelius, who had the startling idea to build a wall from coast to coast. In 1987, the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has become increasingly popular among long-distance thru-hikers and day walkers.

If you're considering taking on this much-loved and historic trail, here is everything you need to know to plan your route: accommodation, distance, its history and how the Cicerone guidebook can help you along the way.

You may be familiar with the Swiss Alps or the French Chamonix valley, but have you discovered Gran Paradiso, Italy's crown jewel of national parks?

Nestled between the Valle d'Aosta and Piemonte regions in northwest Italy, this mountain wilderness spans 700 square kilometres of spectacular alpine terrain. The park takes its name from the 4061-metre Gran Paradiso peak – Italy's only 4000-metre summit lying entirely within its borders – possibly derived from the ancient phrase granta parei, meaning "great wall", a local interpretation that fits the towering granite peaks dominating this alpine landscape.

The Rhine is more than just a river. Flowing through the heart of Western Europe, it has significance far beyond its relatively modest 1232km length.

It can be described as four rivers in one. Firstly, it functions as an important national border; secondly, it is the source of many of the myths and legends central to European culture; thirdly, it is a great commercial artery and location for industry; and fourthly, it has a magnetic attraction to tourists and pursuers of leisure activities.

You can cycle through six countries on the Rhine Cycle Route, EuroVelo15. 🚲

Looking for a family-friendly short walk in the Lake District? Easdale Tarn could be the perfect choice.

This walk is one of the most popular from Grasmere and is suitable for most abilities. Route finding is easy, and the setting of the tarn and surrounding fells is very beautiful. The paths are well-maintained using large stones and boulders. There are no stiles, but a number of gates divide the lower meadows.

Did you know that Kala Patthar has the best views of Everest?

Situated at 5,645 m, high above the Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar offers fantastic views of Everest and its surroundings. Everest is only 9.5km (6 miles) away as the crow flies and so the South Summit is clearly visible as well as the South-East Ridge, a sheer section of ridge that was first climbed by Hilary and Tenzing. The ridge is the last major challenge for those ascending the mountain from the Nepali side.

"Sunset anywhere in the Himalaya is one of nature’s Oscar-winning performances, but watching it from the Hispar Pass you really are in the royal box. Exiting at stage west, the sun defiantly flings its last golden rays straight across the level snowfields of the pass and onto the lofty summits of the mountains beyond. Beneath you, invisible beyond a foreground of undulating snows, the awesome defile of the Hispar Valley is already fading into the obscurity of gathering dusk. One by one the shadows leap from their daytime lairs and invincibly stalk their way skywards up the slopes, eventually reclaiming even the highest peaks from the glorious dying light."

"The Himalayan dream seemed destined to remain just that. A dream. Then out of the blue I was invited to trek to the south side of Kangchenjunga. The Nepalese government had just lifted access restrictions to the northeast corner of their country, and I would accompany one of the first groups ever to trek there. That was another life-changing experience.

The ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ journey proved to be just the first of many, and nearly a quarter of a century later the exotic nature of the high Himalaya has become almost familiar. But it has not lost the power to either excite or inspire. For it is not just the mountains but the people who live among them that reward every visit and ensure a return. Again and again."
