It’s only fitting that we head back up to Scotland for Day 9, and this is a great one! The John o’Groats Trail is a challenging hike from Inverness to John o’Groats along the coast. Across 233km, you’ll experience some of the most spectacular cliff-scenery in Britain, as well as ruined medieval castles and a wealth of wildlife and seabirds.

The John o’Groats Trail is looked after by the Association of Northern Trails Scotland, a small Highlands-based charity that relies on donations and lots of volunteer help. Overall, they aim to make life better for locals and visitors, encourage slow and sustainable tourism, and help people appreciate the environment, conservation, biodiversity, and our natural and cultural heritage.

Yesterday, the trail began in Ulverston, but today’s passes through it on the fantastic Morecambe Bay coastline. The King Charles III England Coast Path: North West is a guidebook to the newly designated national trail, which runs from Gretna on the Scottish border to Chester across 590km. Don’t worry, though, this is ideal for a section hike, too, especially along the Morecambe Bay coast!
