Built in 1890, this funicular still runs the way it always has: water tanks at each end, filled and emptied to balance the two carriages up and down the cliff. No engine, no electricity involved. It remains the steepest fully water-powered railway in the world.

Part of Walk 3, it carries you from Lynmouth harbour right up to the Cliff Top Café in Lynton, worth the ride for the view alone.

According to the playwright Dennis Potter, who was born there, the Forest of Dean is as beautiful as any place on earth. An exaggeration, perhaps, but this idiosyncratic, otherworldly place has that effect, with a surprise around every corner: a stunning view, a glimpse of fallow deer or, even more exotically, wild boar. Sandwiched between the Severn and the Wye, the Forest of Dean is easily accessible from nearby Chepstow, Monmouth, Lydney and Gloucester.

1,200km of France's Atlantic coast, from Roscoff down to the Spanish border at Hendaye. 🚲

La Vélodyssée is the French section of the EuroVelo 1, following along converted railway lines, canal towpaths and quiet lanes. With 80% of it traffic-free, it suits families and first-time tourers just as well as it does the more experienced. Ride it in one go or split it into three roughly week-long sections.

Crossing the Valbona Pass on the Peaks of the Balkans trail, with views opening up over both the Valbona and Theth valleys. One of the standout stages on the route, though worth checking the snow warning in the guidebook if you're hiking before mid June.

The High Scardus Trail is a three-week trek through the mountains of North Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania, covering 314km and crossing state borders on foot as you move between the Shar Mountains and then the Korab, Deshat, Jablanica and Galichica ranges. It's remote, it's largely undiscovered, and the wildflower displays along the way rival anything you'd find in the Alps, without the crowds.

Along the route you'll stay in small mountain villages and guesthouses, getting to know local communities. The best window for trekking is late June to September, which keeps you clear of snow at altitude.

Haflinger ponies on the summit of Tromeja, where Slovenia, Italy and Austria all meet. Not the tallest peak in the book, but arguably the most symbolic, this is where three countries, three languages and three cultures share one small patch of grass.

Storm clouds over Bled Castle, right where the Juliana Trail drops you after Stage 4. It's just a short climb up from the lakeside path, and the terrace views are simply wonderful. Built for the Bishops of Brixen back in the 11th century, mostly rebuilt after the 1511 earthquake, still standing guard over the lake.

From the chalk cliffs of the South Downs Way to the Highland scenery of the West Highland Way, each of these routes' start and end points have easy access to bus and train links, making it easier to walk without worrying about getting back to your car.
