Reasons we can’t and won’t work on your Amazon / AliExpress e-bike.
1. They start fires. Data from the BBC below shows over 2000 house fires started by e-bikes over the last 5 years.
2. As a result we can not be insured to work on them. Insurance companies have just taken this off the list of insured activities of a bike shop.
3. Trading standards sent out explicit warnings to bike shops, advising on the liability implications of attempting to work on them.
So what can we work on?
1. Any bike that has a branded motor, battery and speed controller that can be traced to a western country who has had to adhere to recognised legal safety laws.
2. Look for the UKCA stamp on the battery and charger, that has not been faked.
3. Brands with an identifiable website with a European or American support contact details and offices.
It is totally ok that something is made in Asia, so long as it has passed local safety laws and has European representation.
Sadly this applies to the whole bike. We can’t even tune the gears of an unidentifiable e-bike. Liability can rest with the last business to work on it, regardless of the work carried out.
We don’t want our shop to burn down, and we don’t want your house to burn down. We don’t want anyone to get hurt. We especially don’t want any of that to happen and be left uninsured and unable to help rebuild a life, a home or a business.
If in doubt. Call us on 01539 312550 and we can advise before you visit us.
Fatalities included people who inhaled toxic fumes from fires or became trapped inside burning homes.
