Naked, unapologetic and making a point...

Dr Victoria Bateman is a woman who refuses to keep her beliefs under wraps. Literally.

She has protested Brexit while naked, appeared n**e at academic events, and used her own body as a canvas for political and economic arguments. Her message is clear: nudity is not an invitation, and a naked woman is not automatically offering herself for sexual attention.

At the heart of her activism is a powerful principle: women should have the freedom to decide what happens to their bodies and their lives.

It’s one that resonates strongly with naturist advocate Helen Berriman. And, as Helen discovers in her interview with Victoria, the two have rather more in common than you might expect.

How do we measure naturism?

Vincent Marty says: "Memberships tell us how many people belong to organisations. Beach attendance tells us how many people visited a particular location. Festivals tell us how many people attended a particular event. Those are all useful measurements.

"But organised participation only tells us part of the story."

The question is whether they describe naturism itself or simply the visible parts of it?

Welcome to the house of FUNN…

After 17 years outside the International Naturist Federation (INF-FNI), the USA has a seat at the table again.

The newly-formed Federation of United Naturists & Nudists (FUNN) is a national non-profit organisation, describing itself as “digital-first, member-driven, transparent from day one, and built around how naturists actually connect today: online.” For now, membership is open only to naturists who are U.S. residents.

“FUNN is not trying to replace or compete with any existing US naturist organisation,” a spokesperson explained. “Our structure is designed to be an easy companion to other naturist-related memberships, complementing the work those organisations already do while connecting members with the international naturist community.”

What is the cost of knowledge?

Like many other naturist platforms, N**e Beach Map and Planet N**e are the latest to introduce paywalls for some of their information.

As we often say about H&E, our magazine doesn’t just appear by magic. It takes time, care and a lot of work to research, write, edit, design, produce, host, manage and deliver every issue.

We’d like to think that it’s the quality of the content that keeps people coming back and makes it worth paying for. After all, while we all appreciate a bargain, there’s usually no such thing as a free lunch...

Booking your next naturist vacation?

There are thousands of holiday villas available to rent around the world, so finding one that’s ideal for naturists should be easy. Right?

A word of advice from H&E’s own travel expert in the September issue: the perfect naturist villa doesn't have to be advertised that way at all. It might simply be a genuinely private property with an owner who couldn't care less whether you wear clothes around the pool.

Equally, somewhere advertised as "totally private" might be completely useless once you realise the entire village can see the sun terrace.

So don’t necessarily ask: "Is this a naturist villa?" A much simpler question is: “Can I relax here, be comfortably naked, and enjoy my holiday without bothering anybody else or worrying about who might be watching me?”

For years, we’ve been told that children seeing their parents naked is somehow harmful.

But is that really supported by the evidence? Research going back decades hasn’t found a clear link between ordinary, non-sexual family nudity and psychological harm.

In fact, some studies suggest it may help children develop a more relaxed and positive attitude towards their bodies: especially in a family-friendly naturist setting.

That doesn’t mean there are no boundaries - sexualised behaviour is a completely different matter.

So perhaps the bigger question is: have we been worrying about something that isn’t actually a problem?

Cap D’Agde naturist village is 70 this year - and continues to divide opinion.

Over the years, much has been reported about the place - some positive, some negative, some shocked, and some misunderstood.

Is it “true” naturism? Sin City personified? Unapologetically hedonistic and liberating? Or simply somewhere that offers great naturist holidays with a laissez-faire approach?

In September’s H&E, regular visitor Charis Brundle suggests that perhaps the thing to do is go and judge for yourselves. You might well be pleasantly surprised, she maintains.

The beaches. The accommodation. The nightlife. The type of visitors, and what they do and don’t get up to. The best time of year to go. Even an update on the current construction work. Charis gives us her forthright views on the Cap D’Agde vibe.

And that includes Vibes, a newly opened modern aparthotel that's bringing the resort right up to date.
