The Railways at Work event at the Great Central Railway back in 2024 took on a 1966 theme, focusing on the World Cup of that year. The event featured reenactors posing as England Football supporters, and the recreation of British Rail's Football Specials to bring fans to Wembley for the tournament.

With this year marking 60 years since England's only World Cup victory to date, as well as the kick off of England at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, here's a fun recreation of a BBC News report from 1966, making use of footage filmed in 2024 and archive footage from 1966. This short VT documents BR's Football Special services, with fans making the journey to Wembley from the Midlands, ahead of the World Cup Final between England and West Germany on the 30th July 1966.

What if...? | 50025 'Invincible'

Entering service in July 1968, D425 was one of fifty Class 50s to be built by English Electric to serve on the West Coast Mainline. By the mid-1970s, the majority of the class would be reallocated to serve the South West region, running express services along the Great Western Mainline, becoming a common sight at London Paddington. The 70s also saw the class being named after key Warships from WWI and WWII, with 025 being named after HMS Invincible.

The launch of Network SouthEast on the 10th June 1986 would see the majority of the class repainted into the toothpaste colours of the NSE brand, where 25 was no exception. Despite the name, 'Invincible' was written off following a derailment on the 6th August 1989, following a collision with a length of rail at West Ealing which had been left in the train's path by vandals. The loco was scrapped at Old Oak Common in October that same year.

Eighteen members of the class survived into preservation, with 50017 'Royal Oak' being one example, forming the basis of this "What if?" image. 17 was withdrawn in 1991, and today forms part of the Great Central Railway's diesel fleet, currently carrying original NSE livery, having previously appeared at the Old Oak Common open day in 2017 and the Severn Valley Railway's Class 50 Jubilee Gala in 2018.

40 years ago, British Rail launched the Network SouthEast brand at Waterloo Station. Last year, in recognition of the NSE Branding, Southeastern returned 465908 into the classic toothpaste colour scheme which dominated the region back in the late 1980s and 90s. The unit was also named 'Chris Green OBE', in honour of the Director of the BR London & South East Sector at the time. Green was a key individual in developing the Network SouthEast brand and implementing significant improvements to services in the region .

Prior to the launch of NSE, Green had also been instrumental in the successful launch of BR's 'ScotRail' services. Last year, at The Greatest Gathering in Derby, 465908 was put on display, with Green himself giving a talk on his career and the development of the ScotRail and NSE Brands in the 1980s.

Two years ago saw our cameras travel down to Dorset for the largest gathering of Bulleid Pacifics in preservation history for Swanage's "Strictly Bulleid II" event. The final day of the event saw a line-up of Southern Locomotive Ltd's four operational Light Pacifics at Corfe Castle station, with 34028 'Eddystone', 34053 'Sir Kieth Park', 34070 'Manston' & 34072 '257 Squadron' grouped together for visitors to take photos.

Pride in the Railways 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️| Looking back to The Greatest Gathering in August last year, and the celebration of LGBTQ+ diversity and history within the railways, with Avanti West Coast 390119 'Progress' taking centre stage, and TfL Pride Liveried 345055 running passenger shuttles along the Litchurch Lane Works test track. The Saturday of the event also saw a pride parade, made up of LGBTQ+ people from the industry.

The advent of the railways in the mid-19th century provided great development and opportunity for the LGBTQ+ community: The railways not only could provide travel for people beyond their local community, but railway hotels and compartment carriages could provide and element of privacy, sadly a necessity for many q***r people at a time where same-sex relationships, particularly between men, were criminalised. As a result, many gay villages and LGBTQ+ spaces would develop in close proximity to mainline stations, such as Canal Street in Manchester, Lower Briggate in Leeds, and Hurst Street in Birmingham.

For more information about the history of the LGBTQ+ community and the railways, I recommend watching the National Railway Museum's "People, Pride and Progress" stream from a couple of years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erjei5qn9Ms

What if...? | 46256 'Sir William A. Stanier F.R.S.'

, 150 years ago on 27th May 1876, Sir William Stanier was born. After staring his career in the railways working for the Great Western Railway, eventually becoming manager of Swindon Works in 1920, Stanier was selected by Chairman of the LMS, Sir Josiah Stamp, to take the position of Chief Mechanical Engineer, utilising his knowledge from working at the GWR. From 1932 to 1944, Stanier introduced several successful steam locomotives designs to the LMS, including the Princess Coronations, Princess Royals, the Jubilees, and the Black Fives.

The penultimate Princess Coronation and final LMS built Pacific to enter service, No.6256 in December 1947, was named in honour of Stanier, who by now had received a Fellowship of the Royal Society. 46256 became the final member of the class to survive in service, and despite being a favourite amongst enthusiasts with calls to preserve her, she was withdrawn in October of 1964 and scrapped by the end of the year.

Three members of the class were fortunate to survive in preservation, each representing different eras of the Duchess's lives. 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland', alongside 46229 'Duchess of Hamilton', was acquired by Sir Billy Butlin, and was displayed at the Heads-of-Ayr Butlins holiday camp. Today, 6233 is owned by the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust, and over the past two decades, has been the only operational example of the class, running mainline tours and occasional visits to heritage lines, though is currently out of service for an overhaul at The West Shed.

Pictured here outside The West Shed in September 2018, following a fresh repaint into LMS Crimson Lake livery, 6233 forms a basis for a photoshop job of 46256. This showcases how she would have appeared in the 1960s, sporting BR Standard Red with LMS lining, a livery which 46256 was one of 16 members of the class to carry. Note an attempt to represent the 'utility front' footplate and abridged cab sides, the latter being a unique modification to 46256 and 46257 'City of Salford'.
