Most tapes infested with mould are treatable however occasionally if mould growth is so extensive the damage is irreparable. Mould thrives in warm, humid environments, and if your tapes have been stored improperly this can also cause Sticky Tape Syndrome which is especially prone with 8MM tapes. The mould damages the binder on the tape, causing it to become sticky and stick to itself which causes the tape to tear when played, preventing the tape from playing at all.
