Few Golden Age covers stop collectors in their tracks like Suspense Comics #3. Published by Continental Magazines during World War II, this issue is best remembered for its explosive, confrontational cover art by Alex Schomburg, one of the era’s most dynamic and influential illustrators.

Schomburg’s composition is pure wartime pulp intensity: a dramatic rescue scene set against hooded villains marked with N**i insignia, reflecting the strong anti-fascist sentiment common in American comics of the early 1940s. Covers like this weren’t subtle, they were meant to provoke, energize, and mirror the anxieties and emotions of a world at war.

The Suspense Comics title itself was short-lived, running only a handful of issues, which has only added to its mystique. Ibis the Invincible!

Debuting in Whiz Comics #2 (1940), Ibis the Invincible is one of the most enduring magical heroes of the Golden Age. Created by Bill Parker and C. C. Beck for Fawcett Comics, Ibis brought ancient mysticism into a superhero landscape dominated by fists and capes. His power comes from the legendary Ibistick, a mystical artifact discovered in Egypt that grants him near-limitless magical abilities—teleportation, transformation, time travel, and more—limited only by his knowledge and imagination.

During Fawcett’s peak years, Ibis became a reliable feature in Whiz Comics, often delivering globe-spanning adventures that mixed pulp fantasy, science fiction, and myth. His stories sent him across continents and centuries, facing mad scientists, occult threats, and cosmic menaces, all rendered with the clean, iconic art style that defined the Fawcett line.

Ibis also shared pages and continuity with some of the Golden Age’s biggest names. As part of the Fawcett Universe, he appeared alongside Captain Marvel (Shazam), Spy Smasher, and other heroes, occasionally participating in crossover storylines and large-scale threats that required magical solutions no one else could provide. His presence added a supernatural dimension to Fawcett’s otherwise grounded hero roster.

After Fawcett exited comics in the 1950s, Ibis, like many Fawcett characters fell into obscurity. However, his legacy endured. When DC Comics later acquired the Fawcett properties, Ibis was reintroduced in various modern contexts, including appearances connected to the Shazam mythos and retro-inspired revivals that honored his Golden Age roots while reimagining his role for new readers.

Today, Ibis the Invincible stands as a prime example of Golden Age creativity: a magic-wielding hero whose stories pushed the boundaries of genre and imagination.
