Over the next several weeks, we will tour the wonders of Scotland. Stick around as we visit ancient castles and admire the beauty of Loch Ness. We'll go on amazing walks on the Isle of Skye and sample some excellent, smokey Scotch. We'll also have a spectacular hike through Glencoe and enjoy the seafood of Oban. Ruthven Barracks, located near Kingussie, Scotland, represent the most well-preserved of the four barracks constructed in 1719 in response to the 1715 Jacobite uprising.

Positioned on a historic castle mound, the complex consists of two spacious three-story buildings that encompass two sides of the compound, each featuring two rooms on every floor. Designed with strategic loopholes for musket firing, the barracks and surrounding walls were fortified, and bastion towers were erected at opposing corners.

Destroyed by Jacobite forces as they retreated after the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the ruins of the Barracks have been diligently preserved as a designated historic site under the care of Historic Environment Scotland.

The site is open to the public at all times and doesn't require an entrance fee.
