A fresh mussel honesty box on the Isle of Mull 🦪

These rope-grown mussels come from Loch Spelve, where they’ve been sustainably farmed for over 30 years by Inverlussa Marine Services.

You can pick them up straight from the farm in 2 or 5kg bags using the honesty box on site, which is such a unique system.

If you were passing, would you pick up some mussels?

Auchentoshan Single Malt Whisky Distillery, sitting on the banks of the River Clyde near Glasgow, is one of the few distilleries in Scotland that still triple distils its whisky.

It’s a slower, more precise process that creates a lighter, smoother spirit. They’ve been doing it this way since 1823.

Have you ever tried Auchentoshan whisky?

The Corryvreckan Whirlpool, off Scotland’s west coast, is often considered one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the British Isles.

Found in a narrow strait between two islands, the Gulf of Corryvreckan becomes the third-largest whirlpool in the world under the right tidal conditions. At its strongest, currents can reach speeds of up to 8.5 knots, with waves rising as high as 9 metres and a roar that can be heard miles away.

It’s at its most powerful during spring tides, around the full and new moon, when the difference between high and low tide is at its greatest.

Would you join a boat trip into the whirlpools?

Scotland’s Best Seaside Town 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Thousands of people pass through Oban every year on their way to Scotland’s islands.

But beyond the ferries lies a town of fresh seafood, whisky, abandoned history and one of Scotland’s busiest harbours.

Oban means ‘little bay’ in Scottish Gaelic and the buildings climb steeply up the hillside overlooking the bay.

I had such a fun time visiting Oban, here are some of the things I did:

🐟 Ate a seafood platter from The Green Shack
🥾 Hiked up to McCaig’s Tower, a building that looks like a colosseum, and has fab views over Oban.
🏨 Explored the ruins of an abandoned hotel on the hillside. This was planned to be an elaborate Hydropathic Hotel before the project was deemed a failure and abandoned.
🥃 Took a tour at Oban whisky distillery - interestingly the whisky distillery came first and the town developed around it.
🍫 Drank the best hot chocolate of my life Oban Chocolate Companychocolate
🏰 Saw the ruins of Dunollie Castle.
🌊 Walked about 50 minutes to Oban’s local beach called Ganavan Sands.
🐠 Ate fish and chips to end the day!

Also, I mentioned in my YouTube video that I’d been to a gig in Oban before, it was Mànran who I went to see and they are one of my favourite Scottish bands! I’d definitely recommend checking out their music, my favourite song is ‘Oran Na Cloiche’ but I can’t seem to add it to this post!

Save this post for your trip to Oban! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This week I’m finally properly exploring Oban, a town I’ve passed through so many times over the years while travelling to Scotland’s islands, but never really stopped to experience for itself.

Often described as Scotland’s seafood capital and the “Gateway to the Isles”, Oban is one of the best places in Scotland to catch ferries out to islands like Mull, Kerrera, Lismore and Barra.

In this video I explore McCaig’s Tower, visit Oban whisky distillery, taste a delicious hot chocolate from the Oban Chocolate Company and check out the busy harbourfront where of course I had to try some of the incredible local seafood.

🎥 The video is available to watch now on my YT channel.

Together with my brother Hugh Abroad we took on the challenge of travelling by canal boat from Falkirk to Edinburgh and back along the Union Canal.

Just minutes after being handed the keys, we had to navigate our first locks, tunnels, and the almighty Falkirk Wheel, but it was honestly some of the most fun I’ve ever had filming.

After a few days on the canal, I actually became quite fond of our boat, Holly.

Have you ever tried driving a canal boat?

Dunkeld Cathedral is free to enter and is recognised as one of the most spectacular cathedrals in Scotland. There’s something really unique about it because half of it is a ruin and half is still in use.

This site has been a religious centre since the 9th century, when relics of Saint Columba were brought here from the Isle of Iona to protect them from Viking raids, turning Dunkeld into one of the most important early Christian centres in Scotland.

The cathedral you see today was built mainly in the 13th and 14th centuries, but part of it lies in ruins because of the Scottish Reformation, while the eastern section was repaired and is still used today.

Where are the best ruins you’ve ever visited on your travels?
