Orkney is continuing to make the news this weekend. There’s been huge interest in the damage to the underwater communications cable which has affected broadband in Orkney and Shetland.

David Delday is the only one of us who knows how to use the “proper” TV camera. He’s taking a well warned break after the Island Games so Rob has being doing a turn for tonight’s BBC Reporting Scotland with an iPhone, ably assisted by Evie taking charge of the camerawork.

Damage to the subsea communications cable which has affected broadband services in Orkney, Shetland and Faroe will be repaired by next weekend, according to the boss of the Faroese telecoms company which operates it.

Pall Vesterbu from SHEFA told BBC Radio Orkney a repair vessel will be at the site of the break around 9kms from Orkney this week to find out what has happened to the cable and fix it.

Mr Vesterbu said customers in Orkney and Shetland have been most affected by the problem. Openreach initially said 10,000 customers had been affected but then scaled that back to “hundreds”. The Balfour Hospital’s switchboard and phone system is now working again after it was down yesterday, with patients asked to call a mobile number while it was being fixed.

The SHEFA-2 cable provides a wholesale link which is used by telecoms companies to deliver services to their customers. This is used by Openreach to deliver the broadband network here, which is then sold on by individual companies like EE, Vodaphone, Sky and PlusNet in different packages. That’s one reason why customers and businesses have had different experiences this weekend - with some experiencing no interruption, others coming back on overnight, and some taking longer to be restored.

It is most likely a fishing boat has caused the damage, according to Mr Vesterbu, but they won’t know for sure until they inspect it. He is calling on fishing boats to avoid fishing directly over the cables and to keep their AIS indicators on at all times so they can be warned if they are fishing too close to the cable network.

The damage to a subsea communications cable between Orkney and north east Scotland has affected "hundreds" of customers in Orkney, Shetland and the Faroe Islands rather than the initial 10,000 estimated by service provider Openreach yesterday.

This morning, an Openreach spokesperson said "We'll continue to assess, but customer broadband impact is more limited than initially thought, with hundreds of customers disrupted. Landline calls were never impacted, and we'll continue to work hard to resolve and repair."

NHS Orkney says telephone services at the Balfour hospital are back to normal. The switchboard was down on Saturday but is fixed now. Emergency 999 calls have not been affected.

Individual customers and businesses are still reporting issues with accessing their broadband, but many people who were initially affected say their services have returned to normal.

The sub-sea cable is owned and operated by Faroese Telecom, who are responsible for repairing the damage. There are no details on how the damage was caused or when it will be repaired at the moment.

Have you been affected by the outage? Let us know.

Orkney’s hopes of taking the Milne Cup home have been dashed after a hard-fought intercounty football match in Lerwick.

Shetland won the game 2-0 to retain the cup, after their narrow win in Kirkwall last year.

Orkney had hoped to repeat their 3-2 victory over our neighbours in the Island Games play off match last week.

Internet and phone services in Orkney, Shetland and Faroe are being affected by damage to a subsea cable which happened around 3am between Orkney and Banff on the north east coast.

SUNDAY UPDATE: SEE OUR UPDATED STORY ON FACEBOOK AND BBC NEWS ONLINE. Openreach is revising its initial estimate of customers affected down from 10,000 to “hundreds”.

An Openreach spokesperson told BBC Radio Orkney “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience, the damage to a subsea cable from Orkney to Banff, has caused from Saturday morning. Customers can still make landline calls, and whilst we’re constantly assessing customer impact, we believe up to 10,000 customers in Faroe, Shetland and Orkney islands could have disruption to their broadband services.

We’re working on repairs as soon as we can and will update further once we can confirm our specific work and timeline. Anyone experiencing any issues should report it to their service provider for further investigation as usual.“

The cable which has been damaged is the
Shefa-2 cable which which is owned by Faroese Telecom. It was last damaged 3 years ago, in what was thought to be an accident involving a fishing vessel.

999 calls are not impacted but the switchboard at Orkney’s Balfour hospital is currently down, with patients asked to call this mobile number instead 07795453757.

We are told providing timescales for full repair of the cable is difficult due to wind, wave and tidal conditions needing to be assessed before any work can take place. .

NHS Orkney is experiencing problems with its phone service - are they affecting you too? NHS Orkney says network issues are affecting incoming and outgoing phone calls to the switchboard and all departments.

The Balfour hospital says teams are on site working to fix the problem. In the meantime it’s asking folk with any urgent needs to call the switchboard on 07795453757.

The issue follows individual households reporting connection issues this week, and some local businesses being affected today.

BT, Vodaphone and EE reported major issues with their services across the UK on Thursday. Today, a statement on the BT website says “Following yesterday's technical fault, we are still experiencing some voice call issues today. The impact is less widespread, but we are working to resolve this as soon as possible. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
