Thursday's weather for Orkney, and a picture of oystercatchers over big waves at the Bay of Skaill by Bruce Flett. A transient ridge of high pressure will bring a mostly dry and settled day in Orkney. However, this will be pushed away to the east by a cold front overnight into tomorrow.

In more detail: This morning will be generally dry and rather cloudy but the odd spot of rain cannot be ruled out. Turning dry and increasingly bright through the afternoon.
Temperatures will reach 11 Celsius, 52 Fahrenheit.
Southerly winds at force 4 to 5, locally 6.
Seas will be rough in the north and west, but moderate in the south and east.

Tonight will see cloud gradually build in, bringing in spells of rain from the west. Rain easing by dawn.
Temperatures will dip down to 6 Celsius, 43 Fahrenheit.
Southerly to south-westerly winds easing to force 2 to 3.
Rough seas in the north and west, slight in the south-east, moderate elsewhere.

Tomorrow morning will see any early cloud or light rain clear away to leave it dry with winter sunshine in the afternoon. Small chance of a shower towards the evening.
Maximum temperatures of 8 Celsius, 46 Fahrenheit.
Southerly to south-westerly winds strengthening to force 4 to 6 once again.
Very rough seas in the north-west, moderate in the south-east and east, rough elsewhere.

Looking ahead, Saturday looks to turn increasingly windy with an area of heavy, blustery rain moving from the west.
Staying unsettled on Sunday, but with some drier and brighter interludes.

Thanks to Bruce for today's picture.

Staff sickness at Kirkwall Grammar School is forcing the Islands Council to ask some year groups to stay home, starting tomorrow Thursday 11th December.

All S3 pupils at KGS are being asked to stay home on Thursday 11th only.

On Friday 12th, only S2 pupils should stay home and not attend KGS.

The Islands Council says teachers and pupils at the school are off sick with winter bugs and it's taking this action as a last resort.

Meanwhile, NHS Orkney is reassuring the community that flu levels in the county are at a manageable level and are not having any impact on capacity at the Balfour hospital.
