🌍✨ The Earth: still worth fighting for

“What actions can ophthalmology take to promote sustainability and reduce carbon emissions?”

Healthcare is responsible for up to 5% of global CO₂ emissions, and ophthalmology, as one of the highest-volume specialties worldwide, has a unique role to play in driving change.

In their article, Zeynep Akgun and Melis Palamar highlight global initiatives like EyeSustain and the Eyefficiency app, alongside hospital success stories such as Aravind Eye Care System and Mahatma Eye Hospital in India, which show that greener practices are possible without compromising outcomes.

💡 The challenge now is to build on this momentum, continue raising awareness, and ensure sustainability becomes embedded in the future of ophthalmology.

💥 Nd:YAG lasers are powerful tools, but they must be used with surgical precision.

👁️ "Let’s use them like surgeons, not like Terminators," says Andreas F. Borkenstein in his latest article examining how standard laser capsulotomy settings can cause fragmentation in IOL polymers.

📊 New evidence shows that even single-pulse treatments can dislodge microscopic particles from IOLs, leading to decreased visual quality and possible inflammatory reactions or pressure spikes.

🔬 Using electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, researchers confirmed the presence of polymer fragments on the lens surface and filters.
