Single-cell analysis has changed how we study biology. Andy Ewing, Professor at the University of Gothenburg, says the next breakthrough won’t stop at cells — it will zoom in on individual organelles, measured in real time inside living cells.

The payoff? Deeper insight into diseases like cancer and neurodegeneration, and faster paths to precision diagnostics. To get there, we’ll need sharper sensitivity, better sample prep, and new tools like nanopore protein analysis and single-cell NMR.

he pressures of AI disruption, “publish or perish” culture and the replication crisis have left scientific integrity vulnerable. Alongside real cases of misconduct, anonymous online attacks are growing, bypassing due process and damaging careers before facts are clear.

Victoria F. Samanidou, Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, warns of a surge in retractions — some justified, others not — fuelled by unverified, pseudonymous criticism.

She calls for an end to anonymity in post-publication critique so all accusations come with a name, credentials and evidence.

13/08/2025

In a world of “publish or perish,” AI disruption, and an intensifying replication crisis, science needs ethical scrutiny more than ever.

But what happens when anonymous “integrity watchdogs” trade evidence for volume, turning critique into public shaming?

Damià Barceló, Honorary Adjunct Professor at the University of Almeria, warns that vague and inconsistently applied definitions of “conflicts of interest” are being weaponized by anonymous mobs to discredit research — often without engaging with the science at all.

He calls for:
🔹 Open, transparent definitions of COIs
🔹 Consistent editorial policies
🔹 An end to anonymous accusation culture in post-publication review

As Barceló notes, the key question isn’t how many papers have been retracted — it’s how many truths have been silenced along the way.
