What VDM said recently about the abducted Oyo school children and teachers got me thinking...
What kind of c0untry are we becoming?
Children left home to go and learn.
Teachers left home to do their jobs.
Today, some of them are still in captivity.
VDM says Nigerians have one danger0us habit we move on too quickly.
Yesterday we were angry.
Today we are discussing something else.
Tomorrow we may completely forget.
But what if it was your child?
What if it was your brother, sister, wife, husband, or friend among those kidnapped?
Would you want the country to move on?
VDM has now called on teachers across Nigeria to stay away from work and urged parents to keep their children at home in solidarity with the abducted pupils and teachers until they regain their freedom.
Whether you support his call or not, one painful truth remains
No parent should be afraid of sending a child to school.
No teacher should have to choose between educating children and staying alive.
As a lawyer, I believe this incident raises fundamental questions about the constitutional duty of govt. to protect lives and property. Every child has a right to education, but that right becomes meaningless if parents cannot confidently send their children to school without fear of abduction.
While peaceful protests, advocacy, and public pressure remain legitimate tools for demanding accountability, the ultimate responsibility for securing the release of these victims and preventing future occurrences rests squarely on the shoulders of the relevant security agencies and government authorities.
When children can no longer learn in safety, and teachers can no longer teach in safety, we are facing more than a security problem. We are facing a nati0nal emergency.
The most danger0us thing that can happen now is for us to become silent and move on as if nothing happened.
Those children deserve to come home.
Those teachers deserve to come home.
And their families deserve answers.
Do you support VDM's call for teachers and parents to boycott schools until the abducted victims regain their freedom, or do you think there are better ways to pressure the authorities into action?
